So I'm planning on making my own CAI, I've had about two prototypes before the actual thing and I'm about to give myself the green light but this one sensor keeps bothering me. Its not the mass air flow sensor, it is directly right of my battery if your facing the hood. It comes out of this hole in the side of the fender and was originally part of the stock air box. When I ripped out the old air box and put on a cone filter their was really no place for it, I don't know what it does and I'm kinda scared. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I see the wires coming from the needle like tip so I know it does something. Should I make it part of my new CAI? Someone please help me.
Yes you should. That sensor is your air temp sensor. Just drill a hole in the lower down pipe, and use a grommett. If you need and more help with the custom cai, look down below in my sig. I have compete instructions on how to make one.
Actually I've been looking at your page for a while, do you think you could answer one question of mine? How did you cut through the metal, not just the 3 inch tubing, but to make the hole in the car too.

i used a saws all, and the whole is UGLY! (it got away from me a few times) but the hole was done in three seconds flat.

But if your like me and never have the right damn tool on site.
I measured out a 3 1/8" circle. The took out my trusty cordless drill, and a 1/2" drill bit, and drilled around the circle. Once I had that done, I took some dikes/wire cutter, and some tin snips/avaiation snips. Then just connected the dots.
After I had the right tools, I cut and sanded down the rough edges.

...i was wondering.... why everybody actually removes the original air box out of the engine? if cold air is what we need why not just run the piping from the cold air location to the airbox instead of using a cone filter? is the original air filter really that restrictive?
What i have found very restrictive is the T shaped tube that goes before the airbox... i have removed the T tubing and the car accelerates faster and seems to have a little more torque on the wheels compared when it was using the T shaped tube.
Also, this tube is a lot smaller in diameter than the airbox intake so i guess now i'm getting more air in...
SergioCR...yeah...i gotta do that one sometime soon...i got busted for my cai. officer didnt know till he seen the part of the car i cut the hole in...it looked really shitty. i have two ways im gonna do it...i could leave my cold air charge on my car....and just mold the box around my pipe...or i could just cut a 3in hole in the bottom and run a pipe down below...dont matter much to me....but big stuff could get up in the box so you might wanna put a screen net/mesh over it....never know when your gonna suck something up there?

Well fie on the toilet! its made slaves of you all. ive seen it sitting there, lazy, slothful porcelain layabout feeding on other peoples Doo-Doos while contribution nothing to society! you get a job!!!!!
The lower box is a pretty big restricted. You will get a lot more air flow with a cone filter.
Also you will need to put a filter in there somewhere, cause the lower box doesnt have any filteration. Just a small open hole.

I wish I would have thought to do that instead of what I did, though I suppose I could go back and do it. I took my handy-dandy tin snips and put four cuts into the existing hole. I then took an adjustable wrench and bent down the four tabs I created. Adjust a little here, a little there and, BAM I had me a hole for my CAI. Not the prettiest way to do it, but it gets the job done.
I wonder if they make a drill bit like what you would use to cut the hole for a door handle for metal. If someone makes one, sounds like it would be perfect if it is around 3 1/4" wide.

Yep... that's why i'm asking too... a friend of mine got busted into an "Emmisions check" and the Cai was somehow illegal here.... so he had to remove the whole thing out...

What i'm thinking of doing is to leave the original airbox with the rectangular filter in... remove the T shaped plastic tube out and replace it with a pipe comming from down the car to get fresh air in...
That can work, but then you would still need a k&n drop in filter replacement. More air flow.
I think I might help Max out with his if he comes over this week end.
I was thinking of keeping the stock upper air box in the car. On the maf side, run the 3' tubing into the stock air box. Gutting the box first thoe. Then run it down through the air box into the fender.
Kinda like my idea for header also. Install new header? Have problems with cops?
Make a heat shield for them. To make them look stok on the outside, but evil within.

I'll try doing that setup.... probably the next weekend...
The headers idea sounds pretty good... but.... will the headers allow me to pass the smog test? some civic guys here actually took them off because the smof test failed...
