ive dont some research on advancing your timing and i hear a lot of good it does for the ga... my question is.. are there any problems that occur after advancing your timing
Well, when i tried advancing my timing past the stock 10 degrees, i got a lot of pinging so i turned it back down to nine or ten degrees. and i use nothing but premium 93 octane fuel. but i have heard of people turning it up to 15. but i dont see how that could be good for the engine. again when i had it anything over 10 degrees. there was a lot of pinging. and i have an intake, header, full custom exhuast. hope this helps

Your pinging at 10deg+ may be a sign of other things going on in your motor. I run 15deg in my GA on 93oct with no pinging.
Your problem could be anything from plugs to carbon build-up.

im not pinging at ten deg. but anything above ten or eleven degrees ill start hearing a little pinging. its not a lot but you can hear it. but any pinging isnt good. The engine is a jdm engine that looks as if it has about 15-20k miles on it. its that spotless under the valve cover and oil pan. no sludge no spots or scuffs on the cams, it was just perfect. the compression is perfect and almost dead even accross all cylinders. there was a little carbon on top of the pistons at first. then i started using cheveron gas and ive had the engine in for two months and after about the first month of using cheveron gas i pulled the plugs and the cylinders were spotless. i was using texaco and diamond shamrock fuel before and with my old engine. when i pulled apart my old engine there was so much carbon build up that it wasnt even funny. it was a poor sight to look at. i mean it was probably an eighth inch think on the tops of the pistons and on and around the valves. but when i put the new engine in i used chevron gas and it completely cleaned up those cylinders. there were a couple of tiny tiny specs of carbon left but there probably not there anymore. but the compression is still perfect and the engine runs great. its just when i try to advance the timing anything past 11deg i can hear some pinging. i would rather be safe than sorry and keep it at 10deg. where i have it now
Your right though, it could be something else like a weak ignition or not getting enough fuel or something to that nature but i have yet to figure it out. The only thing i can think of for maybee having a weak ignition is that my battery is pretty weak. it drains a lot faster than normal so the alternator is probably working harder than it should. when i play my system for about 15-20 minutes my battery is almost dead. and thats not even at full blast thats just playing it normal. so it could be just a weak battery that might cause a weak ignition. everything else is either new or working perfectly with no problems. i was going to get a gel cell battery but since im selling the car in a week i dont want to put any more money into it. So ill just leave it set at 10deg.

I do have the pinging problem time to time.... but i have noticed that it only happens when the car is hot (at operating temp).... what could be the problem?
As wth everything in my life - things aren't quite the same with my Sentra:
I've been running 15° for two years and 50,000km. I have run 93 octane as well as 87 octane with this timing and I notice no pinging whatsoever, regardless of octane. I have never heard any pinging at all. Nothing. OEM exhaust and intake, as well as custom CAI and exhaust. 100°F summers, too. Wierd.
im running 19 degrees timing with no problem ran it at about 15-17 before for over a year with 93 octane and occasionally 110. i dont think anyone has done a dyno or detonation timing test on our cars with race gas. i dont think it would make too much of a difference.
i keep on reading and been seeing you guys talk about upgrading the timing. How is that done? do you just go up to a shop and tell them to tune it?whats the stock timing set at on a b13?what are the advantages of having it higher?

tons of threads on it man. stock timing varies...easiest way to do it if you dont know how is find a friend to show you how or get a haynes type manual.

Nah no problems just use 91 or higher octane gas and enjoy your FREE 4-5 HP increase...

Stock timing for a b13 GA is 10 deg. advance it to 15 deg. and your all set. go to WWW.SENTRA.NET there's a write up there on how to do it...
