Help! My water pump pulley is loose?

I’ve noticed this clacking sound coming from the engine bay. Today I realized it’s this pulley…

The pulley is loose to the touch. I can wobble the thing back and forth with my hand. I hope this is an easy fix cuz I need the car this week.

Not sure what to do or how big a job this is. I'm just gunna dive right in and find out I guess.

Any opinions ideas or advise please let me know ASAP!

Thanks
Seth

for one it isnt the power steering pulley. it is your water pump pulley. there should be four small bolts holding it on. it the bolts are loose just get a 10mm wrench and tighten them up and make sure it is fully seated. if some of the bolts are missing you will have to find the right ones to replace them and again make sure the holes are lined up and that the pulley is seated all the way on. Its not that big a deal. its an easy fix. maybee a couple of minutes. anyways i hope this helps

Hey you’re right! It is the water pump.

I tried tightening those 4 bolts but it only seemed to help a little.
I wonder if there is a seal or something going bad in the pump.

I should be ok for a little while but I'm gunna have to pull it sooner or later.

Thanks man!

You need to replace the water pump. The slop in it is the bearing. You must replace it. You will throw the belt eventually if you leave it and it will start leaking coolant. DO asap.

^^^^^ Replace it as soon as you can. It will fail, and could posiblly damage your engine.

Yep! Thats about what i thought. Thanks Gearhead!

Anybody got a water pump for a 1.6 they wanna sell me?

s

Just found out a new water pump is $60 plus shipping & tax. $80 shipped overnight plus tax.
I may just have to go that route because I got a trip planned next weekend. Damn! I hate being pressured when fixing my car.

Ok I searched and all I found were write ups on the UR pulley swap. This really didn't help me.

Anybody know the best way to go about removing my water pump?
I'll have about 6-8 hours to do it in.

I don't really want to remove the power steering reservoir but if that’s what it takes... than it's gone.

Any help/suggestions?
It really is a pain getting at that dang water pump!

It helps if you have small girl-like hands because everything is so tight in there. I had to remove a couple of items to gain access and it was well worth it. Also, Nissan dosen't provide a gasket, so you have to have a tube of silicone. Should take 1-2 hrs.

Yeah, i have none of the above!

What all exactly did you end up moving out the way?
I can move the Power steering reservoir but the AC has got to stay.

Anything else?

Seth, I just did mine during my swap, as it was leaking. It is a royal PITA. Not much room to get in there. You don't HAVE to remove the PS pump, but it helps greatly. The AC most definely stays, and is not in the way. You remove and reinstall the pump from underneath, no need to remove the PS reservoir.

Loosen All your belts, and remove the crank pulley. Then remove the wp pulley, and PS pump. You will likely have to CUT off the 3 hoses that are on the pump and thermostat housing, as they will NOT want to come off easily. Unplug your thermo sensor on the thermostat housing. Then remove all the bolts, keeping track of where they go , unless you have a FSM (As it lists which length bolts go where) . I recommend replacing the thermostat while you have it out, plus hoses would be a good idea too. Then separate the wp and the thermo housing and install the housing onto the new pump. Make sure to use RTV, as no gaskets are provided. Then reinstall.

Good Luck!

Thanks John!
Good to see you on the boards this morning. Just in time too cuz I was about to start pulling parts. I would have made things difficult by going in from the top eh.
Much obliged.

I’ll let you know what happens.

Thanks man.

Things are not going as planned.
I can’t seem to be able to loosen the PS/WP belt. The dang thing wont budge. I’m sure I just forgot to do something but what was it?

Even if I get he PS/WP belt off then what? I can remove the PS unit I guess.
It’s raining now so I had to take a break.
I’ll be back at it in a few.

Did you loosen the bottom "pivot" bolt on the bottom of the pump? Do you have the tensioner loose?
