I finally advanced my timing...

so yeah i finally advanced my timing, and WOW omg i hella felt it.

it was at 0, so i put it on 15, and yeah it feels awesome.

one question, when you advance it, are your rpms supposed to go up? and when im flooring it, my friend said that a lil bit of white smoke comes out of my muffler. its happens only under hard driving though. could anyone shed some light on this?

anyway, i think everyone should advance their timing, its one of the best 'free' mods

white smoke dunno....sure its not grey? that would just be built up carbon. your rpms will go up when you advance it...atleast mine did. i advanced mine to 19 or 20 degrees.

100% Correct... then you will be set to optimize the fuel you're using. Then you need to stay with that octane fuel unless you want to readjust.

Question for a noob guys... I just got my ass spanked by a '92 Civic SiR tonight in the middle of a rainstorm... He got me out on the highway, that was my first mistake... anyway, how much of an edge would advancing my timing 15 degrees on my 91 NX 1600 give me? The guy had me by almost 10 lengths... That's not cool.

Doesn't that car have a b16? If it does, all the advancing in the world won't give you an edge....a turbo would

if your timing was originally 0, something is wrong. The car SHOULD be 8 ±2 stock. Make sure you put the car in timing mode before you checked by removing the TPS sensors and revving the motor a few times.

This is a bad way to adjust your timing. First off, you need a higher grade of fuel to run advanced timing (I use 93 octane) I also suggest you run 2 tankfulls of the good stuff before you do it. 2nd, Knocking is bad and you won't always hear knocking at idle so if you are trying to advance it to that point, you can go all the way without hearing squat. In order to do the timing, you need a timing light and I suggest you read up on it. I have an article linked at the bottom of my technical section: click here.

15* is high enough, there is nothing to gain by going higher (cept worse fuel economy).

ok, adjusting the timing is good for about 1-2hp, 3 tops. TEN car lengehs!!!! In that case, I'd say about 40+hp will give you the edge. Forget adjusting your timing, if you wanna catch up, you have a few options:
1. Every bolt-on made for the GA16
2. NOS
3. A mild turbo setup
4. complete engine swap

You have a nice car, but I'm sure an NX2000 couldn't keep up, not to mention, I'm willing to bet that SiR had some extra goodies as well.
