Hey, guys. How's it going?
I'm not doing to bad myself.
My ecu is bad in my Sentra, so I have to buy a new ECU soon. A brand new one, from a dealer, costs abut 650 dollars. I said screw that, i'm buying the performance chip because it costs the same amount.
1) What kind of effects will the new ECU have on the engine meaning accelaration, top speed, gas milage, idle rpm, engine reliability?
2) My car is bone stock. Can I put the ECU in without any other upgrades?
3)If I were to get the JWT ECU, where do you guys recommend I get the ECU from meaning store or website.
If you need to know my CAR SPECS:
1994 Sentra XE
Manuel
No performance parts
93,000 miles
One more thing: Anyone have a JWT ECU in your car? How do you like the ECU? Feedback would be great.
Thanks in advance guys and gals

Well, me personally, I do not have the JWT ECU. I have read nothing but good things about them. I would call JWT and see what they say. Because since you have a stock car, I don't know if it would be worth it. Also, you will have to buy a SE-R ECU of the same year as your car, and send that in. So you will have to go find a 1994 SE-R ECU, buy that, then send it in to JWT for them to reprogram it. I would recommend calling JWT and asking them for their opinion. Because usually in the "modding" process, their ECU isn't exactly one of the first things you do. So call them and talk to someone about it, see what they say and post back. Good luck.
I have a question. If I bought that SE-R ECU and reprogrammed it for my car, than say sometime down the road I drop a SR20 in, could I send that same SE-R ecu back and have it reprogrammed for the SR20?
Monty - I do not have the JWT ECU. Although I have heard great stories about JWT themselves. Yes, you will be able to get it reprogrammed for an SR20. But, I believe you have to send it back in and have them reprogram it AGAIN. Cost, I don't know what they charge, that's why I would call them and ask. Re-post after you talk to JWT and tell me what they say. Thanks.
Hey, Zexel. Hope your still checking this post because everytime I call Jim Wolf i'm put on hold for like 15 minutes. Still trying to get that ECU, but I need to talk to someone at that place before I can get back to you on that you know what I mean.
Okay. So, I called Jim Wolf and this is what one of the sale guys named Ben said:
I can buy an SE-R ECU from them for like $500, but it will cost an additional $599 to get it reprogrammed for a GA16.
So, I asked whats a cheaper way?
Ben then said, hehe, I made a rhyme, I could go out and buy a used SE-R ECU for like 200 to 300 dollars used then send it to them to have it reprogrammed for 599 dollars.
So, either way, it's still up the ass expensive to upgrade the ECU for my car. And just to let you know, that, when I say they upgrade the ECU they really upgrade the core of the ECU, so I guess it means the same thing. So, I think im just going to buy a used ECU made for my car instead of the Jim Wolf.
If I had an '91 to '94 SE-R Sentra or a '95 GA16DE engine and up, I would of definitly sent my ECU or core to have it reprogrammed.
I guess us '91 to '94 GA16 owners are kind of out of luck on the Jim Wolf ECU as far as paying for the ECU and reprogramming it.
But, I don't care. My Sentra is just for point A to point B trips and not performance. That's what my 240SX will be for when I get it. AS for my Sentra, one day i'll be rolling down the street with a NEO engine in it someday. I Keep Dreaming. Hope this helps everyone. PEACE OUT.

Yeah. It's VERY expensive if you buy a new SE-R ECU from them as well as getting it reprogrammed. I wonder if a G20 ECU would work? I mean people put those on SR's...but then again, it flips around as to that is why people put them in SE-R's. Anyways. You could find a used SE-R ECU for cheaper than that. I can only imagine. Hell, G20 ECU's go for $100 shipped sometimes, and a lot of people are searching for those more. So price probably jumps up. Anyways, good luck with whatever you decide. And an ECU should definately be last on your list after all the bolt-ons.
You can find a used ECU for less than $200. CHeck out sr20deforum.com for a good classifieds section. Then you can have JWT reprogram that. It is SO worth it. It is probably THE best bolt on you can do to a GA16. You can add it now without ANY other mods. and it will STILL make a huge difference.
Ok. So now im getting pulled in two different directions. "Don't get the ECU till last!" "Get it now. It's the best bolt on for the GA16!" This is what I hear and I am indecisive.
I really want to find a used SE-R ECU or G20 ECU for that matter and get it reprogrammed because I do want my car to have a bit more go.
So I decided I will just go with the a regular used ECU. WHY? I figured it would be worth more in the long run to spend $200 insted of $600 and up because i could use that money to pay my car off faster and get the 240 with the SR20T in it. It would be better to upgrade that car and motor don't you think. I do.
Thanks for the help.
But, now I got a new weird problem. I checked my ECU by turning the screw on the back and got the throttle postion sensor code. My check enging light is on cause of this. But just recently, the check engine light has been going on and off when I drive!? I'm still sure the ECU is screwed up though. So, hopefully the new used ECU should take care of it.
Well, I'll check out that forum wes and see if I can get a used ECU or one from a parts yard. Really quick question. Whats the MOST you should pay for a used GA16 ECU?
I want to know WHY someone would say to save the ECU for last. JWT programs for CAMS, TURBO, Nitrous, or a standard profile regardless of bolt on's. It's not like you have to get it reprogrammed if you add a header or CAI. Our car's have MAF's so the ecu learns these mods.
Hey Thanks wes. I still really want to give my car a little more pep, so if I find a used SE-R ECU for about a hundred, i'll try to get that ECU upgraded. I just can't pass emisissions with that check engine light on.
I found out when I leave my car alone for a while, mw check engine light isnt there. But when I drive and go WOT, the light comes on. Weird! I just got to find an SE_R ECU for a good price.
wes - You made my point of why he might as well just wait. Since our cars have MAF, we might as well spend the money on header, CAI, and exhaust. For probably the same price, if not cheaper. I mean, look at it this way:
Hotshot CAI - $210 new...$125 used. 8whp
Hotshot Header - $425 new...$300 used. 8-12whp
Custom 2" exhaust - $175 w/ Dynomax Ultraflo and 2" bends. 4-6whp
For $800 new...$600 used, you can yield about 20-25whp.
JWT ECU - $600 to reprogram, we'll say $100 to find a used SE-R ECU. Guess around 10-12whp.
Now, just so you know, all of my information was found and provided by:
THIS is my main reason for waiting. Why spend the same amount of money, to gain...FOR SAY...8whp less. And since the GA ECU can somewhat reprogram itself around the header, intake, and exhaust...I find there is no need until after all bolt-ons. Now true, the exhaust used on Sentra.net is NOT a Dynomax Ultraflo, but since it is straight through, I would find almost no difference in performance. Again, my information is provided and this is my reason for waiting to get a JWT ECU.
