Pardon me if this has been discussed before but after reading the old threads regarding VTC I was wondering if it'll be bad or good for the engine if I keep the VTC always on by hooking it directly to the battery. Will I gain hp from this? This is because my 94 GA16DE didn't come with VTC and I got a surplus head with the VTC cams and solenoid. Or maybe just run the solenoid to a manual switch that I can turn on/off? Is this a good idea or should I just get a surplus jdm ECU and harness?
One thing I noticed is that the intake camshafts are different...VTC one is longer.
My GA16DE also came without VTC and I got an imported engine from Japan with VTC, I conected the VTC manualy with a switch and relay and I feel a difrence with it switch on and off. 1st at idle with the VTC on it sound a bit asif the engine is stragiling wit the VTC off it idle smooth, with VTC on from 1500rpm it pulls great untul ±6000rpm and then sounds like some restrictor comming on, and if I swich the VTC off at 6000rpm it sound smooth again.

stealthB13 yeah my motor isn't from those markets.
fos160se, great to know you got it working. Compared to your old engine, was it significantly stronger? Must be hard switching it on/off while driving huh or do you keep it always on? Say what's the relay for?
I'm still waiting for news from my supplier in case he can find me a surplus harness for it and he said there's no need to change the ECU since they're the same. Can anyone verify this?
im taking a shot in the dark here because im not really sure
buy i dont think that the ecu will be the same because i would not know when to activate the vtc
for example a non-vtec ecu can't control the vtec solenoid
Go_fast ,I can feel a diffrence between not having the VTC on and having it off, its not hard to switch on and off because I use a manual switch to do the switching. I just leave it on unless you want a smooth idle.I use the relay to keep the high current away from the switch, just to let the switch have a longer life span.

you're right stealth, got confirmation on the ECU not being the same.
fos160se, how about compared to when you were still using your old engine with no vtc? Which do you think pulled better? About the idle, was it unstable with the switch on?
Go_fast, The new engine pull a bit harder than the old engine. The idle with the VTC on is not smooth it sound like it got a mild cam in, its the easyiest way to describe it.

Talking about VTC, can someone please tell me how to differentiate GA16 that has VTC from the one that doesn't have?
Or if you guys can just tell me where to find the mechanical part that control VTC and what it looks like.
My car is NX1600 B13. The car and the engine is made in South East Asia. I think my car does not have VTC but the other guy I talked to insisted that all B13 GA16DE has it. So I 'm just wondering if my car has this VTC or not.
Thank you for taking your time and consideration.

V.Putin on an engine with VTC if you look behind the engine on the passenger side you should see a harness-connected hexagonal solenoid not unlike the solenoid beside the AAC valve. If you just see a hexagonal plug(no connector) then it doesn't have it.

Thank you Mr.Go_fast.
I have looked at my engine on driver's side(mine's right hand drive). I found that hexagonal thing at the upper part, looks like it's very near to the left end of intake camshaft. But it looks more like a big hexagonal bolt because there were no holes for plug. It just completely metal. Could this be the part that you told me to look?

Now that's a really fast reply.
I think my car does not have VTC then because the bolt is completely metal and the are no wires running from it.
I opened the valve cover just a moment ago and I looked at the left end of the intake camshaft. I don't see anything that could be
the intake camshaft controller. The end of both intake and exhaust camshafts look the same.

hmmm.... i like tha sound of this post... i have vtc... how do i go about putting a switch on it? which wire do i cut, and where do i cut it???
i have an engine that is about to crap itssel, so i might as well try it on this one befor i put my new one in.
