Oil getting into alternator.

I just got off the phone with my mechanic. He told me that my alternator has been failing because of oil getting into it.

It is the 3rd aftermarket alternator that he has supplied me in the past year. He's telling me that he will not warrant the alternator that is be replaced right now because oil is causing them to fail.

I know that I do have an oil leak problem.

My questions.... Will oil leaking into the alternator cause it to fail? and, where would the oil have to leak from to reach the alternator? Valve cover?

Thanks

I would think that oil getting in the ALT would make it fail.

Its' probably a matter of amount... if there was a large amount of oil splattering into the alternator, it could cause the brushes to fail over time.

Post Oil leak

I had the same problem. I replaced my alternator 3 times before I realize that my front main seal was leaking. Eventhough the main seal is underneath the alternator for some reason the oil flows up and gets into it. If you don't know were this seal is at, is in the main pulley connected to the cranshaft. The seal itselft is only about $10 but it is a biatch if you try to do it yourself. I pay $80 to get it replaced, but it can be done if you have the proper tools. I hope this will help. I you have more questions halla' back, yo!

Is the "main seal" also known as the front crank seal? I might try to replace it myself.

Is there a particular shop manual that is better for the GA16. eg. Hayes?

Thanks for your help

I always use either Haynes or Chilton Manuals and they work great for me. You could also buy a manual specific for just the engine which is made by the same companies and you can get them at any auto part.
