Question coolant loss-bigger problem?

hey fellas,

my search in the ga16 section brought up possible causes as:
1) difficult to see hose leak under intake(pipe or manifold?)
2) thermostat
3) crack in head gasket?
4) coolant sensor

i hope i typed those right. I have refilled the coolant overflow twice in the last 3-4 weeks. My question is, is there a way to test for # 2-4 of the above list so I only have to replace the true problem? Are there any other signs or indicators of a malfunctioning thermostat? I cannot see any coolant leak or drip in my engine bay.

*-About a month ago I changed my fuel pump. When the original pump was dying, i still drove her although she was very rough, before she finally died. Could I have done fatal damage if I was running lean during this period?

thanks,
fritz

first off, most of the time when a thermostat goes out, your car will overheat. have you ever noticed white smoke coming from your hood? if you have thats the coolant burning, and which could mean a cracked radiator hose or a worn out head gasket.

as for the fuel pump and the car running lean, did you hear any metallic pinging before it died? if you did, then your engine is most likely in some serious damage.

dude, I think you mighta nailed it. Metallic pinging...like an occasional and subtle, uh, like dragging a stick on the wall of an aluminum garbage can (except quieter)? Every now and then for several months, i've heard this sound. I thought it was something else. Except for the coolant loss, she seems to be running fine....for now, i guess.

damnnn!

thanks for the reply A.V.
