Ok guys I need your help! I live in VA where we do have emissions testing. Heres my set up: 1994 Nissan Sentra 1.6 Liter GA16DE Motor 4spd Auto, Hotshot Header, Random Technology Hi flow Cat, Greddy SP Cat Back exhaust, Stillen (JWT) Pop charger, Unorthodox undrive crank pulley, OEM NGK spark plugs, blue NGK ignition wires, and timing set to factory specs. I went to get my emissions done, and they said that I failed and have to much NO ppm.....what is that? And why did I fail? My service advisor said that the person doing the emissions test did the test wrong, and said that he needs to do the slow test in 1st gear and the fast test in 2nd gear and it will pass no problems. Are any of you running this setup or similar or have experienced any problems like this? Any help would be soooo greatly appreciated!!! Thanks
I think they do a 25 mph and a 35 mph test, each for a specified length of time. I believe there is an additonal parameter of staying within certain RPM ranges; I don't think they are focused on the gear you are in, just the RPM (achievedd through proper gear selection).
With proper timing, functional EGR and cat, you should pass.
Well here they do the 15 mph test and the 25 mph test. On the 15mph test the requirment of NOppm is 1035 and my reading was 2842. On the 25 mph test the requirment of NOppm was 936 and mine was 1838. My HC ppm at 25 mph was 142 when the limit is 125. Im thinking that it could be my EGR valve...because thats exactly what my advisor said it could be as well. I havent changed my O2 senser yet either and my car has 95,000 miles....think it could be any of these things? How much would these things cost at the dealership?
Is your EGR functioning properly? Sometimes the EGR may be slow or stuck or there is not enough/too much back pressure causing the egr to open/close too early/late...
I don't see why you can't pass.
next time just drive the car a little longer before you take it in.
Take it some where gehtto, find a shop, i'm sure they'll pass ya.

My guess of 25 and 35 MPH tests were off the top of my head -- you are likely correct, 15 and 25 sound more like it.
There is something wrong with your car (duh!, right?). High NOx can come from carbon on pistons, bad EGR, lean mix, etc. Your high CO may come from incomplete burn or overly rich -- you have symptoms that often contradict each other.
I would take it in for a computer diagnostics at the dealer or good repair shop; test should be less than $100; go from there. Have you pulled any codes from your ECU?
Where in VA are you?
Aside from the environmental pollution (let's keep it clean -- if not for us, for our kids), you are likely not getting full performance. It is a myth that you have to pollute to get performance. Some of the repair shops have emissions test equipment (though not as fancy as the dynamometer-looking apparatus they use for the test) that allows them to test and fix in the same shop.
