Try checking the timming 1st. It might be set to high causing detonation. Well its worth a try.....lol

Yes timing advance would cause the car to lug and lope if it was detonating. But also if the car is detonating, THATS BAD, so either way go to a mechanic have him listen, and he can tell you just by the sound!

ive heard that if there is an oily residue on your old spak plug that you either have a bad rod or piston rings or it could be a leakey head gasket no sign of oil on the spark plugs ive also read here that it could be the water pump as opposed to the timing belt man i dont even know where the water pump is and shes not really slugish it dosent really make the noise until it gets warm i dont know maybe i should just sell it

one thing to consider is the check valve on the cylinder head, wherein the oil is drained from the head and the valves make a rattling/ticking noise at start-up, and when oil pressure is restored, noise goes away.....

I've got that ticking noise at start-up for about a couple of seconds before it goes again. Where is this check valve located on the head? Should I be worried about the noise? Thanks.
