Nissan Sentra Power Steering pump problem

Hello,

I have a 1995 Nissan Sentra GXE. My car makes some humming sound
which is some thing like whinning when it is started.
I had the Nissan dealer look at it. Since the
car is quite old, my car has some problems. One of the problem
which can probably be the reason for the sound is that my power
steering pump has a bent shaft leak. I was advised by the dealer
to replace the pump, hose( which has the leak), 2 clamps and belts.

My car can drive fine even with the noise. I am guessing that the
power steering pump is fine. Can I replace just the hose, clamps and
the belts without replacing the pump? Is the hose part of the pump or
separate from it? Can one just replace the hose without replacing the
pump? Will it help is removing the noise which I hear when I start the
car?

Is it also possible that the noise is because of Catalytic converter or
rear O2 Sensor? The dealer had told me that they probably also need
replacing. Since, the car is quite old I don't want to spend lot of
money on repair but get by with just the needed ones.

Your advice will be very much appreciated.

Cheers,
MK

As far as your noise, changing a hose is not going to help unless its got such a leak that the pump goes empty. If you have run the pump empty than is will make noise until you get all the air out of the system. If the pump is bad than it will make noise and then one day it will quit working and you will not have any power steering. And next to no steering. Not trying to scare you but it can be very hard to turn, much harder that a vehicle that has manual steering, when you pump goes out!

IMHO, replace the pump and hose, bang on the converter and see if the insides are broken up. It will sound like its full of rocks if its broken inside, Id the converter is broken up than it can cause problems, fuck the O2 sensor and drive it! I have two 1990 nissan stanzas and one 1990 nissan stentra. Drive it till the wheels fall off!
