Bought a 97 Sentra a few weeks ago. The trunk leaked. After reading a number of posts I figured out it was from the back lights. I confirmed it with a hose. Many of the posts talked about how hard it was to remove the old sealant. I just pulled off the light lens and added a strip of windshield caulking I bought from NAPA. The roll stuff. I took off both back light lenses and cleaned out the grooves and put in the new chalk. Took about an hour for both. Didn't see any reason to clean off the old caulk other than to clean out a place to put the new caulk. Hope this helps someone.

think i might have the same problem i opened my trunk today and noticed a big puddle of water closer to my back seat though so it might be my trunk seal ....

Don't know if the trunk leak could make it to the back seat. I was able to take a hose and run it over the tail light with the trunk open and see the water coming in. Good luck
