I've got a GA16DE 1993 Sentra XE 4dr which is pinging under load now. I've dialed in the timing as prescribed by the forums but the pinging persists. At idle the car is smooth as glass but as rpms and engine load increase the pinging begins. It sounds like if you lightly tapped on the exhaust plumbing with a screwdriver. The frequency is similar to blowing in a soda with a straw but obviously more metallic. The odd part is the problem becomes progressively worse as the car warms. Could it be fuel igniting in the catalytic converter? I often use 93 octane but the problem continues. Cam chain guides worn? Cam chain tensioners bad? I've also got a fuel injector that shows resistence out of spec, is it running lean and pinging in that cylinder? There's a long list of things wrong with my 120,000mile Nissan but this seems the most urgent. Hints much appreciated.
P.S.
My pulley has 7 lines for timing, 4 on the left edge and 3 on the edge closest to the motor. Do I time it for 10degrees using the 4 on the left, or the 3 on the right, or all of them, just the 3rd line from the front of the vehicle?
i know that you have a 1.6 but my 2.0 had that prolem and my mechanic told me that it was my EGR was pluged and that was causing my pinging(and i only run 92 octane). he cleaned it out and it was fine after that.

i am not possitively sure what he did but i believe he may have taken the tube from my header and cleaned the tube out. he said it was clogged. but i have a se-r so yours may be different.

it's pretty easy to take off the egr and clean it with some carb cleaner, make sure you don't hit the diaphram though. Use a little wire to make sure the tubes aren't clogged and make sure all the little rubber vacum lines are still in one piece.
My 93 Sentra GA16DE makes engine knock/pinging if the adjustment is set to 10. 6 or 5 works better reducing the engine knock a lot.
A technician also suggested me cleaning the EGR valves will help and my car is close to 155,000 miles. He also suggested that eventually, the cylinder head must be removed for a more complete cleaning procedure as well as some corrections.
I think that I will wait the maximum amount of time before going for the cylinder head removal, even I can still wait for the EGR cleaning. I don't know if after all this years, the cleaning of the EGR valves will be that effective.
Because my car's computer has never make the check engine light turn on while driving, the tech. told me not to worry about it yet, but I am aware that my car has mileage.
If I have to remove the cylinder head, I will take the opportunity to probably remove all the valves, seats, lifters, springs and replace them all, even the chain because I will be already there. By the time this happens, I will try also a few mods Nissan employs in current models like the Molybdenum coating for the pistons, and maybe those new pistons Nissan use in the new 2000-03 Sentra which are less prone to engine knock. An effective coating for the pistons is excellent against excessive heat too and there are places that can do the job in the U.S.
That is, if I decide to keep the car for many years more. I will not pay a huge amount of money for a car someone else might enjoy instead of me.
