Hard start since distributor o-ring was changed

We changed the distributor O-ring & the car wouldnt start anymore. We removed the distributor cap & put it back on again and was able to make the engine start but it gives a different sound now. What can I do? Also please answer if the car needs to be tuned up when distributor O-ring is changed? thanks

I haven't de atached my distributor yet so... Do you mean that you took yours totally apart from engine and changed O-ring between distributor and block or was it between distributors head and distributor?

I'm asking because if you took distributor totally apart from engine, then it's more than probable that you need to use timing ligth to adjust your timing again. And it's also possible that you screwed the ignition timing pretty totally. But don't worry, it still is pretty easy to fix.

-Head work done. Porting, some valve job (lightening, cleaning and polishing). Intake- and exaustports on the head totally re-designed and grinded.
-Some gauges: oil temp, oil pressure, fuel pressure, meter, lambda and external rev. meter with change ligth
-Free flow air-filter (calculated intake pipe lenght) with CAI.
-Lightened battery, moved to back

Hi No-Pain, thanks for replying. I did both. I took the entire distributor assembly from the engine & changed the O-ring. While the assembly is detached, I took off the distributor cap (black colored sort of like plastic material) & opened it because the rubber seal between them is also sticking out (unfortunately I havent found a replacement yet so I put back the old rubber). I re-attached the dist assembly back to the engine after changing the O-ring, & the engine won't start. wE were only able to make the engine start when we took off the distributor cap again (just the dist cover, the black one) & put it back on, making sure that the little stick hanging on the cap is in the right place. Now the engine would start but the car gives a funny sound. It's not like it used to be. you think it's the timing?? does the car need to be tuned up? thanks a lot

Well...
If you de-atached your ignition wires from distributor cap then it's possible that you migth have attached those again on wrong order. This migth cause very odd running sound or migth even prevent the engine from starting at all. Check the wires first. Small hint. If you don't have a repair manual or any other source for rigth order, then for example look at my pics on nissan almera 1.6 project thread or search the forum.

And because your distributor has been totally apart from the block it's sure that you have atleast check your timing because it would be quite a luck if timing would be exactly correct. And it's also possible to put the distributor back so wrongly that there is totally wrong timings. Did you check the position of the axle at the end of the distributor when ripping it off? and more important question, did you put it back, exactly same position as you took it off?
