1996 nissan sentra gxe... do i have a belt or chain? my car isn't in my presence at the moment (at repair shop). I'm also curious as to how much, at a shop, does it usually cost to replace the chain or belt? I don't want to get ripped off and the mechanic who is suppose to do the job hasn't called me back yet.

If you take it to the dealer they would book in about that price range. He didn't ask.
"Y0.. if eyez take Mah Whip 2da lokel rench, how much he gonna charge?"
Sure you can get it done cheaper if you KNOW what the hell you are doing. If you have to ask weather or not you have a chain and then how much it's going to cost, chances are you are not savvy enough to dicker based on knowledge. So please, don't ask where I am at. Answering this question for someone who has an idea and someone who doesn't are two different things.
i wasnt asking whether it was a chain or belt, I know it is the chain. I also know that I dothis for a living every day and make very good money doing it.
a regular t-chain job on this car would be less than 500 easy and done right... in this area
i was just flipping out over the price, and guess i just was wondering where in this country it would cost " $750 and $100 for that job to be done.
Yea i figured it was a chain. I've yet to get that deep into repairs. Lotta people in this area seem to think the repair can run me near 1000. which i find outrageous. So i pay between 500 - 1000, is it worth it already with 179,000 miles on it. The transmission worries me... How long have you guys been running on your regular trans?
Is it possible that my timing chain just may need to be adjusted? The mechanics told me it skipped, blah blah blah and had to turn the distributor 360degrees to get it running, but it won't stay running... I'm interested to know the process as to why it will run for a second, but not keep running due to the timing chain. I don't understand the process in how it can weaken the spark. I'm a newbie with working on it, but I'm also not a dumbass when it comes to understand a process that is explained. If there is a free book that explains the processes of the car engine or great site, let me know.
that dont make sense???
anyhow, i got an auto with sum where round 248000
and a man. with 236 i think those are right, theyre close anyhow. and both drove out real well.
dang grab a 300 dollar motor outta the scrapyard, rent a cherry picker for a day, and get a couple off-duty mechanics to do the job for some money beer and pizza.
half joking.
Crazy how fixing the motor can cost more than just dropping another in.

360 degree is one turn so you are back where you started !!!! So this is nonsense.
here is the shop manual. http://www.nissanforums.com/b14-95-9...ce-manual.html
From what I have read here the upper chain guides and tensioner need replacing first.
You may not need a complete T-Chain replacement.
If the valves hit the pistons however I would start thinking about a low mileage engine replacement as suggested by Dan9
Ask for a compression check.
Good luck....

Why was your car in the repair shop in the first place? Was the timing chain making a rattling noise?
When mine was making rattling noise I called a few indepedent shops and the price was around $700-800 which is not that unreasonable considering how much work is actually involved. I decided to do this myself and got the parts from courtesynissanparts.com. In the end, the total cost for parts was 210 that included gaskets, guides, tensioners, and water pump. I did not buy the chains. Book time for this job is 12 hours, a good mechanic that knows what he is doing can probably do this in 6-7 hours. You do not want to know how long it took me
Fuel, cranks, but no spark. I was getting very weak spark. The car was having hesitation problems for about 2 months, than it dies on me. Right now I can get it to turn over, but not stay running for more than a second. The mechanics say its the timing chain? According to them, they had to turn the distributor to get it started. I don't understand how turning the distributor will get it running if the timing chain had skipped? If it runs for a moment, could I be looking at something besides the timing chain?
If the chain skipped, then the intake and exhaust cams do not open and close the valves at the correct time intervals. Messing with the distributor might help, as it advances or retards the spark timing. But I would think, depending on how bad it skipped (if it did at all), that the engine would run really rough. Does pressing the gas pedal when starting do anything?
