the other day we were installing an act performance clutch on my 1998 sentra and my boss said that when he was turning the flywheel it felt to him that the motor did not have enough compression. i have several things done to my car like performance clutch, short ram intake, catback system, header, ngk sparkplugs, short shifter, and messed with the timming. so i should get some good top out speed out of my car and i see my car topping out a about 110 to 115 mph in 4th gear. in 5th gear it only goes down meybe another 2 or 3 miles more. so i was wonering does this sound about right to anyone. i plan on checking the compression on my car as soon as the shop gets a few more cars out, and what should the compression be on my car any advise will help.( i have the 1.6lt in my car)
I compression tested my sentra (1997 GXE w/ GA16DE) and I got between 180-185 across the board. Make sure you have a good battery, a good starter, and keep the throttle open while you are cranking it over.
ya im not sure about the GXE tranny ( the 5th gear may be just for milage) altho my sx se will pull 120 easy in 4th gear as well as 5th gear, and my car is mostly stock, and later today i can post up the factory numbers for a compression test if you dont have them, ohh and when your doing it you need to tunr off your fuel, you can do this a number of ways, personaly i like to just pull the fuel pump fuse

110 - 115 is actually what it should do (mine does that)
Thats good. I was just guessing since I have no idea. My car is automatic, and I don't take it above 80mph since there is no point in pushing a slow car.
ok well i might just dissagree without proof about the psi on the ga16, because i beleive my fsm has lower #s, altho i am way to lazy to go out into the friggen cold and find it in my car

oops, should have read it in more detail. I get close to 120 in fourth and the numbers I posted for compression is what it says in the Haynes manual, I also did a compression test on mine a couple months ago and got 185psi on all 4 cylinders.

I'm reading the FSM right now and this is what it says.

The speed limiter is set to 109 mph, so unless you have a JWT ECU you will be limited to that top speed.
well i dont have an ecu or any cams and my car does well over that speed. i was wondering when i rev up my engine and i hit red line is it supose to sound like it wont go any hire or somthing because my car doesnt do that it just goes as far as i want it to go.is it possible i could have some how messed it up and now i have no rev limiter. because my car doesnt even stop at the speed its supose to.

My Fuel cut out is at about 7100 -7200 rpm and engine wont go any higher.
The top speed is from the ECU not the speedo, so I you can record 112 or 115 and the limiter will appear not to cut in. one opinion here is that the speedo is wrong by that amount.
I have not tested the cut out against my GPS so I dont know the answer. there has been much discussion about this issue in the past.
