How to Replace a starter, 97 Nissan Sentra

What would be the easiest way to replace the starter of 1997 Nissan Sentra? I have been under the car, removed the screws, the starter is loose, there is just one connector that I can't remove, the space is too small. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Steps to replace 97 Nissan Sentra 1.6L AT starter

  • Unhook the negative battery terminal.
  • Lift the car.
  • Slide under the car.
  • Remove the brace that holds the intake manifold. See photo.
  • Remove the oil filter. Have a small cup ready to capture 1 ounce of oil.
  • Unscrew the solenoid power supply from the post. Use pliers.
  • Unplug the harness from the solenoid socket that comes from the battery. Use a screw driver.
  • Unscrew the bolt #1 from the bottom of the engine that holds the starter. You will need a 6 inch or longer swivel angle joint. See photo.
  • From the top of the engine, unscrew the ground wire bolt that runs from the battery to engine housing. It is also the bolt #2 that attaches the starter to the engine housing. You will need a socket extension. See photo.
  • The starter comes off.
  • Installation is the reverse of the removal process.

Good luck, it is moderately difficult.
