Smile '97 GA16DE engine problems

Hey all,

I just picked up a '97 Sentra XE with a GA16DE powerplant and the engine seems to have very little compression. It will start up and idles very rough until it stalls out. There's no smoke and the engine looks very clean.

Is there a series of tests I can do to find out exactly what the problem is? I know a leak down test is probably the best way but i'd rather hear some input from gurus first before I waste time and money. Thanks for any help.
