it seems like the loud noises (loud at idle, VERY loud when you first step on the gas) and rattling (worse when you first step on the gas and TURNING the wheel) are coming from the exhaust pipes right after the manifold and around the oil pan.

There is a LOT of rust underneath, the covers that protect the exhaust pipes are rusted & falling apart. Car has a new O2 sensor.

I saw a few early 90s toyotas yesterday, and they were all making the same noise as they were passing by!

Is my only option to completely replace the exhaust system, or at least the pipes between the manifold and the cat..????

if you still have the heat shields on, those might be causing the rattling.

yes, the heatshields are vibrating and rattling.. but that's not the main problem, the exhaust manifold is cracked !! i bet that's causing the super loud noise & also the excessive vibrations

do you have a stock manifold? you might also want to check the exhaust flex pipe.

yeah i bought a used manifold so when it gets here i'll put it in. i'll also rip out the heat shields and will check the flex pipe at that time thx
