does this timing tensioner look good

I took a look at the upper timming chain to see if the tensioner is wearing out. My engine kind sounds like a diesel engine I hear some rattling so I decide to take a look under the valve cover.

I have attached two pictures one of the tensioner and another one of the chain itself. Is it me or am I missing a guide on the top on the second picture.

Tensioner looks shot with all that pitting. I would replace it.

There is no guide on top.

is it normal to have little slack when you press the chain on the side. For example on the picture on the bottom the chain on bottom right side moves just a bit.

I would look at the new part to see what it really looks like. Have you used synthetic in its entire life? I have, but never looked at my tensioner. I had the tensioner go on my KA24E in my 94 hardbody. You would here this rapping slop sound when the engine was hot on a restart. They used plastic tensioners on those.

Is that tensioner plastic or metal? I wonder if the acids in the oil pitted the metal. a reason to change the oil all the time or use synthetic.

The surface the chain rides on is plastic. The rest of the part is metal.

It's all apart, so dosen't make sense to just change it now that you've come this far? It definitely looks spent to me.

Its shot, replace it. Its only $30 bucks. That is pain in the ass investment when you would have to tear it back apart.
