you may just want to clean off your pully and needle. its hard to see if you have ac and all of the extras. but it does work i have done it several times.

ive advanced my timing and my idle is right but why do you think my idle doesn't stay up when i turn my ac on. its frustrating, when i stop at a light i now have to put my car in neutral and foot on the gas to keep it from dieing. i have a tach and when i turn it on the needle goes up but it comes back down to where it was before i turn it on. and then fluctuates and then finally dies. its like a 15-20 second process. but i also remember when it worked properly it would go up like 200 rpms and stay there to compensate for the ac being turned on and now it doesn't anymore , any ideas about this?

The IACV (the thing with the screw on it to adjust idle), also has a solenoid on for fast idle.

SilverSentra: how much did you advance your timing?

Hey guys, Im kinda new with all this. I have a few questions.

In Picture #4, do you have to use the inductive cable?

also do u have to use a light gun? what does the light gun do?

where is the crank/pulley with the marks?

Could i adjust the timing by just loosening the distributer cap bolts without the gun?

Inductive cable? The light gun has an inductive cable and you need to connect it to number 1 ignition wire. The crank pulley is located opposite of the tranny, see those belts? Its one those pulleys...its at the bottom.

Yes of course. Thats the way to adjust the timing BUT you couldnt accurately tell whats your tiing without the gun.

You adjust the distributor to adjust the timing and you use the gun to see whats the timing.

ok i dont get what u mean by moving forward and backwards because in your last picture, moving forwards would make it go into the negative numbers u had put on the picture...so does moving forward mean turning it towards you or away from you ??

forward means turning it away from you (clockwise). moving forwards DOES NOT make it go into negative numbers. get a timing light and you'll see what I mean

Hey, this timing advance eats my gas mileage when shifting at 2500 rpm. But I started shifting at 3000 rpm RECENTLY, like you told me to do last year and WOW, i started getting more miles out of my tank. Thanks for the advice that I didn't follow til last week.

I'm also concerned about the higher PPM ratings I received in my recent smog test. Can you tell me what could be the problem: Smog Check (Luckily Passed)! - AllNissans.com - NPM Forums

3000rpm should be the normal shifting rpm...well u could wait higher but ive always shifted at 3k. and i get what u mean by clockwise, its just that your picture , if u look at it again, if u stood infront of the car as u were adjusting the timing, moving the distributor towards urself would be going like 10,11,12,13 etc... and your last post said to turn it away from yourself ( if u were standing infront of the car) and that would technically retard the timing. thats where i was kinda lost at first lol

Maybe you pros can answer a question for a newbie- I have a replacement engine that does not have a distributer or a crank pulley. Was told that it has a new timing chain. I have read that you can find TDC by hand cranking the pulley bolt until you feel compression coming out of the #1 spark plug hole. Is this correct?
