Car makes popping noise under WOT or heavy throttle (please help!)
Ok, so my car makes a popping sound while under heavy throttle. The sound is accompanied by a hesistation in the acceleration, and the noise appears to be coming out of my intake tubing. I have two videos to help identify the problem. You may have to turn your volume up; the popping isn't as loud as it is in person. If it matters, the car does this while driving and while free-revving.
does it affect performance at all? does your car have 200,000 plus miles on it? (no way related just thought thats what I saw on the guage cluster). Doesnt sound like a mis-fire, but if its coming from the intake tube thats gotta be bad. something in the engine might be bent. when was the last oil change? does it burn oil?

Yes, it affects performance. The car hesitates when it pops. My car has 230K on it. Last oil change was a few hundred miles ago, but I might change it again just to be sure. If it burns oil, it does so discretely.
I don't have a gun--I would have already checked it. I'm going to try and find time this week to look at the situation more closely. If it truly is pre ignition, then this next tank should solve that as I will switch to 92 octane and see what happens.
That sounds like a timing problem indeed. To fix it, just turn the timing to 10*, the factory setting. Or you can use colder spark plugs IF your problem is preignition. Do you have a perforance exhaust by any chance? I hear a lot of CRX's that sound like that......
Ok, so I talked to a mechanic about my car and he agrees with you, Jrinke. He believes it is timing, but wonders if my distributor is broken. I really need a timing light to check the problem. I have a stock exhaust.
