OK, backstory...95 sentra gxe 1.6 manual. starter began going bad (car would randomly not start, had to push start often)and it seemed after some diagnostics with the good ol' voltmeter that the voltage at the starter solenoid ignition plug was inconsistent. I rewired the plug to pull additional voltage from the battery with the flip of a switch. Worked like a total charm for starting the car until some dumb broad pulled out in front of me and I had to panic stop, and accidentally hit the starter switch causing the starter to engage while the engine was at easily over 5k. Needless to say, that was the total end of the starter. I could smell it from inside the car. Also caused the car to cut off. Could not restart and when i flipped ignition to start, everything just cuts as though something was shorted and rapidly draining the battery. Towed 'er home and figured it was foodged. Car sat since maybe a week or two before thanksgiving.
Now: got a used starter that works well. Installed it. Cranks the engine, but it still won't fire up. Have to use my jump box for starting power. Battery drained. Pulled plugs. Definately getting fuel. (car had just had a fill up 2 hrs before the incident) Figured engine was flooded so I let er sit open for a day then put in new spark plugs. Still just cranks. Temps around here haven't gone over 30 in over a month and I read that these cars have very tempermental cold start problems. Tried foot to floor method, no start. Tried unplugging (what I believe to be) the coolant temp sensor as I heard that sometimes helps, still no start.
Now i'm lost on what to do and I just ordered a set of brand new kyb's...so PLEASE someone have some good tips!!!!
Well if your battery is drained and you have to jump it everytime then thats your problem. Putting your foot to the floor on a fuel injected vehicle does absolutely nothing if your trying to clear a flood. It does nothing no matter what your trying to do.
Other then that theres 50 million other reasons it wouldnt start. Id start looking around the starter since everything worked fine before you put it in. Are you still using your homemade switch thing, or have you wired it stock again? If you had "inconsistent voltage" to the starter solenoid beforehand, then you already had a problem there that needs to be fixed.
Other then that...what have you done to verify that your getting fuel? You could try taking a look at your ignition to make sure your getting a spark. Easiest way (in my opinion) to do that is to get a cheap little spark tester and hook it up to the end of every plug wire one at a time. And make sure you ground it! You'll be able to see the spark quite easily if everythings working.

hold the throttle all the way open while starting signals the ecu to not open the injectors, thus not sending fuel into the combustion chambers. in turn the flooded cylinders burn the excess fuel

i beleive that it did work until he pretty much turned the starter on while the car was running
once again please dont post on a subject you know very little/nothing about. it could cause some problems.
thanks
Now now guys lets not start bashing. Sorry about the grammar, I was half asleep. So I go out to try it one more time today and it just barely almost got ignition which kinda scared me so I completely let off the gas pedal (just had my foot barely resting on it a tad)
What's odd is that the strange voltage issue is gone with the new starter...and when I say I tested it, I mean I tested the plug that goes into the starter solenoid from the harness. It consistently tries to start with the jump box every time now. I'm going to let it sit with the spark plugs out for a while to "air" it out and go from there.
The rotor/cas probably has NEVER been replaced (I bought this car off my parents who were letting my no-sense younger brother who knows crap about car maintenance use it) I pulled it and there was corrosion on the terminals and rotor. I cleaned those up fairly good using sand paper and battery terminal cleaner (works MIRACLES) and was getting pretty good spark.
btw, has anyone actually proven that the "foot-to-floor" for flooding method actually turns off injectors? Or is it just speculation and works because it's letting more air bypass for ignition...?

you know i was actually beginning to doubt that method too. my car starts.... never mind, long story short i thought my car was getting flooded over night, but when trying this method, the car starts the same, except its revved when it starts up. so i dunno anyone know if the foot to floor method actually works?

thanks
Know nothing about? Thanks ass.
Your right about the clear flood mode, I forgot about that, but that is only on SOME vehicles, and thanks for being a prick about it. And I wouldn't think our car would actually have this, and apparently (according to the two of you) it doesnt. Therefore, putting your foot to floor does absolutely nothing, like I said.
And then you ask if your even correct about it after telling me to keep my mouth shut when *I* dont know what Im talking about. Give me a break man.
YES clear flood mode does exist, like I said, its only on some vehicles, not all. Some people who are used to driving older carbureted vehicles, who made a habit of starting their car with the foot to the floor actually end up preventing the car from starting if it is equipped with clear flood mode. No flood, no fuel, no start. Then they end up bringing it to the shop because they cant figure out whats wrong with their brand new car. Its an easy fix
And about his starter, why dont you reread his post a few times then get back to me. I gave him a logical place to start to resolve his issue. Diagnosing over the net is bit more difficult then having the car in person and at the shop. Why arnt you offering him any suggestions if you know what the hell your talking about?
Im not a rude person, and would never put down someone whos trying to help another to the best of their ability. And I wouldnt go on a geology forum and tell someone who just might have a career in geology that I know more about volcanos then they do, because they might school my ass.
Because then Id look kind of foolish. Catch my drift?
Have a '97 sentra with 1.6 and about 2 weeks ago this happened.
Sat night car was parked outside so i started it and moved it into the garage (run time less then a minute--car had been sitting for atleast 24-36hrs). Turned it off went to bed. (temp was well below 30F--even in the garage). Next morning would not turn over, that night would not turn over, next morning would not turn over. Signed onto this site, read a couple things, then proceeded to:Take out spark plugs (left them out for a few hours), got new ones, put them in(along with some oil in each cylinder), and then turned it over (using my other car for a power source--jumper cables) for a solid minute or more with accelerator to the floor. Finally started after what seemed like eternity.
I hate this engine!...but atleast if you know what NOT to do, seems to work every time.

Still a f!#king issue:
OK, so you're saying that you just cranked the car over and over and over for a minute??? good God! Won't that burn out a starter?! I just pushed it into the garage today after leaving it outside sans plugs for about a week (had other sh!t to do...). Put the plugs back in (they're new), it literally fired right up. For 2 seconds. Then died. And I'm right back to square one.
Here are some issues in case they'd cause adverse effects on starting(and by the by, I inherited this car from my ricer younger brother so the "mods" suck):
1)conical aftermarket filter
2)aftermarket fart-can
3)free exhaust bypass via 2nd post-cat o2 falling off the car (culprit?)
