Good thought and Quite possibly an issue.. But if its oily up top there are several options.
Valve Cover................. The highest spot to leak oil
Distributor Shaft seal..... Slightly below VC on driver side
Oil Pressure Sending Unit...Under Intake?? on backside of engine
Oil Filter........ Either the gasket could have blown out or a pinhole from a rock
Rear Main seal ..............Basically between Engine and Trans
Your best bet for finding it will start with a THOROUGH cleaning of the engine bay. Get some GUNK or something similar and follow the directions..(You may want a can or 2 or Brake Cleaner for the harder stuff). DO NOT use a pressure washer of Car wash.. A garden hose will do nicely if you have patience and let the cleaner work.. After the engine is clean...(Bottom too).. Then you can use the cardboard trick... ALso while the engine is running ontop of the cardboard keep an eye on things in the engine. (A small, powerful flashlight can be useful). More than likely you will be able to get a better idea of where its coming from..
Then we can help you fix it..
