marks on piston...

ok so i took my spark plugs to check them, thought there were causing the poor accel/rough idle, and when i look in cylinder #1 there were marks on the piston. im gonna go try to get aa pic right now, but what causes this? incorrect timing? ive been trying to find a friend with a gun but no luck. they have one at autozone for $19.99, which is in my price range, but they are sold out and they next one up is $70. anyway so set/check timing w/o a gun?

What kind of marks? Carbon will buld up which is normal. If the valves hit the piston the car would run horribly if at all as it would bend the valves causing them to not seal or break...

No you MUST have a timing light to set the timing.

I appreciate you want to make sure your car is running OK adn as a result I have some advice that will help you immensly.

Download the FSM for our cars and read it thoroughly. It will tell you how to troubleshoot just about EVERY problem, and give you schematics/diagrams for everything. It even tells you how to adjust the timing/idle and MANY other things. Honestly it is the bible. So if your worried abotu being stranded about the car be proactive and download it.

thanks, i actually already iit downloaded. about those marks though.... when i look into the cylinder, the piston is black. not direcly down from the hole, but a little on the firewall side, there are a couple shiny silver dots... they look like the pistons recentally hit somthing. also there are 2 plugs the plug into the tranny(A/T) one of mine is soaked with ATF, sorry i couldnt find a pic in fsm but here is a real on

Sounds to me like the spark plugs could be too long, are the plug electrodes smashed at all? If not either you're letting dirt and crap through on the intake side or you have valves hitting the piston. The carbon is normal.

You "can" set the timing by ear, but I wouldn't recommend it if you're not too familiar setting the timing that way, the FSM and a timing light would be the best way to go. You dont just slap a timing light on it and go, the FSM has a guide to it, you have to disconnect your TPS and rev the engine a few times I believe.

You don't have one of those fiberoptical cables on a wire with a small lens on one end and a screen on another, do you? That would be such a good thing to have in this case... Too bad I left mine in Moscow
Either way, check your air filter and if it clears, de-carbon your pistons/valves by either acetone or water hose method... Does the car run 100% normal, with no pinging?...

Go to a different Autozone, it's like dirt, they've got places all over the place.

Or better yet, have them call other places and ask for the 19$ timing light.

1. Use the phone

2. Get a PO box

3. Now that we have that out of the way...

I know you think I am picking on you but I want to make a point. It seems as if everytime someone posts an answer that is not easy or what you want to hear or agree with there always seems to be some reason as to why you cannot remedy it. Not sure why that is but from my perspective it seems odd. We give you the answers but yet there is another question or a reason why you cannot solve it... What gives?

to add onto wes. How in the world do you have no address what so ever. do you live in your car or something. Ask your boss if you can ship it to work. Get a po box number. Hell you can even ask them just to ship it to the local fedex/UPS and you can do a pick up only.

Where there's a will there's a way.... Many companies ship by other methods such as USPS.
