Checking/refilling Manual transmission fluid on 1.6l 200SX

I want to check the transmission oil level on my 95 200SX because there seems to a small leak and its been 30k or so since it was changed (at least they charged me for it!). The Haynes book suggests that this done by removing the speed sensor. I removed the lock down screw and I can rotate the thing around but it won't come out, at least with what I consider to be reasonable force.

Is there some trick to getting this thing out or do I need a big hammer?

No hammer just a twisting and pulling motion. It is plastic and will break if you use a hammer or large pry bar. Although I did have some success with twisting it so that the screw flange is exposed and gently prying it up.
