you have to remove the starter from the car, then remove the solnoid. but the over all cost of the damn thing you might as well buy a whole new starter and get everything replaced like the brushings and what not with a better warrenty.

i heard that the seloniod is close to the firewall and its really cheap to fix. you could get it from autozone. i just got a new starter not to long ago. hmmmm.... looks like i gotta figure it out.
the solenoid is part of the starter, it's not mounted on the firewall. these starters can be rebuilt and have the solenoids replaced but like chronoti said, you're better off just getting a new starter. it's cheaper and much easier. when you replace the solenoid, you've got to remove the starter anyway, which is a task all in itself, then you've got to take the solenoid off and mess with the bendix drive. then once you've gotten it fixed, who's to say something else won't go wrong with the starter later on that would cost you more money, like the brushes or the armature... you'd have to replace those too, if you can find them. personally, I think it's much more practical to get a new starter, and most stores will give you a reman one with a lifetime warranty. that way, if ANYTHING goes wrong with it, you just bring it back and get a free replacement, instead of disassembling it to fix it.
but that's my humble opinion, but like I said, you can just replace the solenoid if that's what you want to do. I will say, though, that I bought an autozone/duralast lifetime warranty starter for my 94 sentra, and two weeks later it went bad.... but at least it was a free replacement, and still will be if it goes bad again. it's a 50/50 chance, but that's just part of owning a car.

This is true on SOME cars, but not nissans. Mostly ford f-150s are such have fender-mounted starter solenoids. And the solenoids for these cars are like $10.
for a starter solenoid, you're looking at roughly $70, special order, through auto zone. that's probably the standard price. I think I paid $90 for the whole starter.
ford is a little behind the times. both starters and voltage regulators are still externally mounted on the firewall, at least in some models. I guess in some ways, it's good.
I happened to be thumbing through the pages of an old worn-out chilton's manual for the 1973-88 datsun 1200/210 and nissan sentra, and noticed that even in the 70s model datsun/nissans, the solenoid is part of the starter.
I think if it wasn't for the technology of foreign cars, we'd still be spraying starting fluid into the carburetors of our cars on cold mornings.
