I need to smog my car soon but I have a check engine light on. Code 0302 which is "EGR control valve does not operate". Took off the EGR. Made sure it was free to move and replaced a rubber hose that comes off the bottom of the valve because it was cracked and had a hole in it. Put it back on and connected all hoses and tubes. Lifted up on the valve with the engine on and it starts to stall like its supposed to. The problem now is that it doesn't move like its supposed to. Pulled off the vacuum hose on the top but there is no vacuum when i let it idle and then rev it. Please help, need to smog real soon.
Thanks
Also, would I be able to smog without this working?
nope.....your car cant have a CEL lit and no codes in the ecu either...
If you have your CEL thrown...and you clear your codes...you have to wait for your monitors to set before you can even smog it...which can take some time...theres so many drive cycles you have to go through...which can be a pain...I had a CEL cause my rear 02 was out, replaced it...cleared the ECU...I waited 2 months before the scanner registered my monitors set...and rdy to smog....
and you just cant disconnect the battery and reconnect it...ive tried...many many times....in left it disconnected for an entire day.
i dont know much about EGR>...sorry that i cant help you there.

Thanks for replying. Yeah, the last time I had to SMOG I had to drive around for almost 3 hours before I had enough sensors up to SMOG.
C'mon guys, I know someone out there knows the answer to my problem. I'm very mechanically apt but I don't know much about EGR's. All I know is what they are for and how they work but I have no clue why mine isnt working.
I had an EGR problem...and there was a tube laying on the exhaust pipe and had burnt through.....replaced it and no problems.....
Hey Stunts200SX
Thanks for the advise but I believe its solved. I went down to the Autozone by my house and borrowed their ODB-II handheld reader and it came back with no errors. Its been a few days and I've done a lot of driving so I think I'll be fine. Yeah, I did replace a bad tube and one that was clogged. I think thats what solved it. Thanks again.
I don't know about your problem specifically, but on many cars there is a electric or thermal switch that switches the vacuum on and off. That may be your problem, look where the vacuum line goes off the EGR valve and see if it is to a switch. If it is, make sure vacuum is going to the input side of the switch. If it is, it may be a faulty switch to blame.

Do alot more driving....I had to drive my car for a month and a half before my monitors set and what not......our cars are one of the pickiest for drive cycles....just take it to the smog shop and ask them to hook it up just to check if its rdy to test....if they said the monitors arent set...then have fun waiting.
Basically, you have to drive it so many time within a certain rpm and certain mph...also so many cold starts and so many warm starts....everything....its ridiculous...i hated waiting driving around with that red square in the window...
Anywho, cool stuff and good job....if theres no codes and ur percentage readings are a little high....there's a blue BOX at kragens that says guaranteed to pass smog....lets just say it cut my NO2 numbers in half...works really really well.

Thanks for all the help guys! I actually got this all squared away. There was actually a small piece of "garbage" that was clogging one of the lines that comes out of the egr. I pulled that out, replaced a piece of rubber hose that had a hole blown out. Cleaned out the tubes with a wire brush. Also moved the diaphram on the EGR a few times to make sure it was not seized up. After doing all that and no error codes, took it down to the smog shop and it passed with flying colors. Almost registered the same values as the first time i smogged it. Gotta love the GA16DE.
On a side note, very sad that I had to take the header off. I love having that low end power back but I miss the high end power a lot. Even my roommate noticed the difference in power.
