ok our sentra has a MAJOR oil leak. this all came about after i repainted the valve cover and notice major sluge ..... then sluge was actualy hard. up till this point i was using a lil thick oil(15~20w-40) due to a leak in the distro. so i chage the distro and for the change after it i still used the thick oil since i had some left over ... back to my point so i changed the cover and used 5w-30 i had sitting around (use it in my camry). also to help a bit with that mad sluge i found i added some seafoam.
parents took the car to miami (400miles) came back 0 oil and sludge at the bottom of the pan. so now the car is burning oil at a rate of about gallon every 2~3 week of normal driving. in checking for BHG, bad rings, and valve seals (since we took the sealing sluge away) i did a compression check
piston / psi
1 / 100
2 / 150
3 / 150
4 / 150
i know low across the board and 1 seems dead. so i added oil to each piston
1 / 150
2 / 190
gave up at this point
so reading around i just want to make sure i'm right in this assumption
pistion rings are worn
but i'm still trying to figure out why 1 is so bad. i had misfire problems on 4 (bad wire) for a bit which is why i bought the compression tester (never used it till now)
any input is welcomed and anyway to take the pistions out with out removing the engine?
Are you leaking oil on the ground or just burning it? 4 Quarts is a lot of oil to use in 2-3 weeks. If the front seal was leaking, you would see it running down the passenger side of the engine, under the crank pulley. With those numbers, I would agree you have bad rings. As previously stated, do a leak-down test. What about coolant? Are you loosing any?
The front seal is a common problem, I would start there looking for major oil leaks.
Looks like you are spending a nice little bit on oil there... how many miles are on your engine? Most likely, you have multiple oil leaks, as well as shot piston rings. On GA16 series engines, they commonly leak around the timing chain cover, distributor, and oil pan... notoriously around the oil pan from the multiple GA16s I have worked on, but the timing chain cover is a close second. If you have another vehicle you can drive on a daily basis, I would suggest pulling your engine out and rebuilding it. If you know anything about engines (GA16 is a really easy one to figure out), you can rebuild on in about a week's time if you have the parts in hand and work about two hours a day. Bad valve seals, which are notorious for going out on GA16s, are also a likely problem for oil burning, as well as your timing chain skipping links sporatically.
or load the car with 80w-50 (yes gear oil) and sell it off.
thats just wrong dude.
