Hello, this is my first post.. So be easy on me.. I think this is the right forum anyways..
Anyways I have a 1998 200sx se. It is manual 5 speed if that helps any. But anyways, when ever I turn on the car it seems to make this really loud noise.. It seems to settle down after like 5 seconds when you start driving. But when you stop you can hear at least the front of the car being really loud. Not to mention. When I drive around there is this grinding noise thats quite loud and it makes noise when I downshift and upshift and just when I'm in a gear and gasing it or braking. Even if the car is in neutral it still makes it. My friend said it was the heatshield or heat shell which ever one its called.. I just wanted to make sure if he was right or not. He told me to follow the muffler, but he has a civic so he wasn't quite sure. He said I could take the heat thing off.. I don't really know how to describe it, thats the best that I can do. Thanks for your help and your time.
hmm sorry for the late late response. I think the problem is with a belt. I'm not sure which belt it is because I opened up the hood and saw the belt had broken, not sure what the belt is called.. timing belt?. Well I was wondering how much it cost to buy one and how to and how hard it is to replace thhe timing belt. Since I can't seem to find any instructions on how to do it anywhere.. Also not to mention my ebrake light won't go off when the car is on when I tested it to see if it could turn on. Not to mention the battery lighth is on.. the ebrake works f ine and the battery was is a month old. Is it because of the timing belt?

There are a few things it could be............... You have to just go through the process of ilimination. Take a long screwdriver and put it on various parts. i.e. alternator a/c compressor power steering pump and listen to the other end with your ear like a stethascope and this should help you find out where the noise is coming from. As for the e-brake i have found that something usually falls down into the hole and stops it from hitting the light switch. Last but not least the timing belt. It could be the tensioner bushings being worn down, but if you don't have any internal engine know how then dont even try! You can get into big trouble if you dont know what your doing. for instructions either run a search or get a haynes manuel at your local auto parts store

stick a screwdriver on the passanger side part of the Valve cover, it is most likely youre timing tensioners. We dont have timing belts, we have chains which should last for the life of your car. you can get the tensiors for around 100 for both of them. the uppers takes about 2 hours to work on the lower its like 8 hours to work on.
i am movin this to the GA section since its motor related.. if you also hit the search button and type in timing tensioners. you will get some good results.

If you are seeing a broken belt when you open the hood and your battery light is coming on then its your altenator belt .Did the noise stop/change when you ran the engine with the broken belt?
Also i have seen the broken alt belt cause lights other than just the battery light to come on,. so that might take care of your brake light too
The car will run but it does some really strange things sometimes .Now im not saying you can drive it around like this but it should run until the battery runs down .
There are some cars that the fuel pump will shut off if the alt quits ,BMW comes to mind at the moment, but not Nissan(at least from the mid 90s back) .
Went through that this summer. My daughter's 96 GXE was making a loud whirrring noise that I could not locate. Not grinding, just a loud whirr like wind through dry leaves.
I removed Water Pump and Power Steering belt, started the car, noise still there. I removed the AC, Alt belt, started the car, quiet -- nothing but normal engine noise. AHA!
I spun the Alt, quiet; spun the AC pulley - sounds like wind. (Actually it sounded like when you take an old dry wheel or throwout bearing and spin it, you can hear the rollers running) Plus there was slight, very slight, but definite, sideways movement in the pulley.
I replaced the pulley (which is a whole story in itself) and all is quiet.
Replaced alternator on the 96 several years ago, that was more of a grinding-sqealing noise.
Replaced the water pump on the 91, even more years ago, that was a straight, dull grinding noise.

No the noise did not stop when I changed the belt. The e-brake light is off now. But that noise is still there. I suppose I could try what Raul did and replace the pullies with a few friends since that seems like a job on its own.. If there are any ideas to on the noise. That would be much appreicated. Until then I think this car needs to be fixed seeing is how this car was supposed to be a gift for my girlfriends birthday. But anyways, I will try to replace or clean the pullies and see what happens to the car after that. I will post the status afterwards. Thanks for the advice
BEFORE YOU GO SPENDING MONEY ON PULLIES , GO DOWN TO THE LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND SPEND $10 OR $15 ON A STEPHOSCOPE. YOU'LLBE ABLE TO TELL THEN EXACTLY WHERE THE NOISE IS COMING FROM . ITS AN INVESTMENT THAT WILL PAY FOR ITSELF VERY QUICKLY
