Hello,
My brother's 98' Sentra 1.6L was running sluggish so i decided to help him do a fairly extensive tune-up. Just got a new battery yesterday (old one was 5 yrs old) and I just installed new plugs (NGK), new cap and rotor (GP sorensen from advance auto, not oem ), and spark plug wires. After doing this i decided to start her up to see how she runs.. and it wont start! It is not even turning over at all... I dont think i'm getting any spark. Is there any way i could have done something wrong during this simple tune-up?
This is the first tune-up i've done on a car with a distributor/cap/rotor.. but i have a haynes manual for this car and everything was very straightforward. The rotor can only go on one way b/c of the screw... the cap is on snug and all wires are in correct firing order. If it makes any difference I unplugged the large sensor on top of the distributor and used some compressed air to clean it out.
Any help would be appreciated, as my brother isnt gonna be very happy!

Can you hear the starter running/turning the motor? Also, did you double check the gap on the plugs? Anything you can tell us about how it sounds or what it does when you try to start it will help us solve your problem.

Nope, can't hear the starter at all. I hear what sounds like the fuel injectors tho... I gapped the sparks correctly to .044" as the NGK website directs.
Also i forgot to ask.. the spark plug wires came with a 5th wire. Its obviously not a wire for the spark plugs but something else, i remember reading about this a long time ago.. where exactly does it go? I do see this wire anywhere on the car relating to the ignition system. I also think its a possibility since these wires are from advance auto that they fit many vehicles and this nissan doesnt require it.
After trying again a few more times i can give a more specific answer on the sound... When i turn the key it sounds like a rotating sound, almost like a grinding sound. When i turn the key counterclockwise to remove the key after this, it makes the same sound.

At the advice of sentra97exe i tapped the starter solenoid lightly.. started right up. At least i know its the starter.. but damn is that thing gonna be a PITA to replace
I am happy you got it started... by the way, that fifth wire is for hooking the distributor to the coil. You probably got spark plug wires for a B13 Sentra, which is not neccessarily a problem, except the distributor is run off a coil. The B14 Sentras, of which you have been working on, has a coil-less distributor, and therefore does not need that fifth wire. Luckily, starters on Sentras are usually fairly cheap, so it should be a pretty easy fix for you.

actually it's not coil less. it has an internal coil rather than external. coil less would suggest that it doesn't have one at all when it just has it inside the distributor rather than externally like the b13's.
