Do the coils ever need to be replaced?

Well, i finally got my truck back together after all the hassle of replacing the stupid PCV valve. But while I was in there, I was wondering if there is a recomended inerval to replace the ignition coil on these trucks (I have a 1996, 4 cyl)? Or is there a good aftermarket coil that will give me plenty of spark? I guess with gas prices going ape they way they have been, this is a good time to start improving fuel economy.

thanks,
Eric

p.s. After letting the truck sit for a few weeks without running the battery is completely dead now. i even started it up and drove it for 20 mnutes. Nothing. Won't even hold a charge.
