Frontier clutch 2WD 5 speed

Anyone here replace a clutch on a 5 speed on a Frontier 4 cylinder 2WD (1998) ? Should this be straightforward, like rmove the transmission, swap out with new parts, replace transmission??? ?

I've taken a look-see under the Frontier, and found I was able to remove all the screws holding the exhaust in place (the only screws/nuts that were rusted), so it looks like I will be taking on this repair myself soon. My repair manual (Haynes) doesn't really differentiate between the different manual transmissions removal, I think some some I'll need to wing it. For example, there doesn't seem to be a connector to remove for the oxygen sensor (and I know not to cut those wires), so I'll probably just undo the exhaust at each end and cable tie it out of the way to the side.

OK, the question : the Haynes repair manual states to buy NEW bolts for the drive shaft unversal coupling to the differential, and a NEW snap ring for the shifter, but even CarQuest doesn't have a listing for these, must be dealer-only. So the question is: why would Nisssan require NEW for these, and with all the clutch kits, U-joints, etc. that are sold and installed, there apparently doesn't seem to be much market for NEW parts for these. Apparently most are just re-using the removed parts? So why, or would I be too cautious by buying (probably special order) dealer parts for these???? Thanks.

i'm just a backyard mechanic and i did my '94 hardbody, which is essentially the same truck underneath. i didn't replace the snap ring or the differential bolts. not sure why one would need to as long as you can see the existing ones are in serviceable condition

but definitely replace the rear main seal while you are in there. it's a cheap part & takes about 5 minutes to change.

sounds like the haynes manual should get you through it well enough

you may want to post over at club frontier for more active feedback

I'm not in any real hurry. I got the crankshaft position sensor and the shifter removed. I couldn't get the gearshift knob to loosen, took out the whole assembly by having helper hold stuff up while I removed the snap ring.
