2006 Frontier LE Navigation System

Last week I purchased a 2006 Frontier LE..... and today I installed an aftermarket navigation system.... Pioneer AVIC-D1

I have installed hundreds if not thousands of car stereos.... I am a MECP certified installer. Using the OEM ISO brackets the installation looked horrible. After some modifications to factory brackets I got it looking good; and of course I did the "bypass" for the nav system.

The issue I am having is noise. With the key in the ACC position the sound is crystal clear... Once I move the key to the ON position I get a very low winey noise. It is not alternator noise as the engine is not running. I have tried it with and without the Pioneer noise suppressor already inline on the constant wire....

My guess is it is picking up electrical noise from another system in the truck that comes on when I switch it to the on position.

Any thoughts?

AIR BAG FIX WORKED GREAT!!

First thought, relocate all system grounds. First question, does it do it after you start the vehicle? If not, no big deal? I mean how often will you be sitting there with just the ignition on and not running? Could be many things, let us know what you find out. Z

I have tried the ground two ways... 1st it is ISO mounted so it grounds through the mounting brackets when it is bolted to the vehicle mounting... and I have it grounded through the METRA harness that I used for the wiring. I have tried it using this ground and no ground on the harness.

The noise is strange. It starts only when the vehicle is in the ON position... not the ACC.
So if I start the car the noise is still there... with an added bones. The noise changes pitch when the engine is revved. So the noise is there when the engine is off or on.

I think there are two different noises being caused by unknown interference. When the engine is running the noise gets louder with the volume turned up.

My guess it is picking up radiant noise from other electronics in the truck. I have tried moving the wire harness away from other wires.

No luck

Thanks for the reply

Okay then, I suppose what I'd consider doing next is to thoughtfully pull fuses to isolate which system may have an issue. Double check everything. Good Luck, Z

Hmmm... interesting , there is considerable amount of CANBUS interfacing within the vehicle which usually doesn't create interference. Most EMI and RFI interference are from things like fuel pumps , relays , alternators and poorly shielded ignition wiring.

You stated your an experienced installer , so please don't be offended with my elementary suggestions.

It's not clear where you are getting your constant and switched power from.

First thing have you tried hooking the power and ground directly to the battery? This will determine if it is coming in from either of those two points.

Is this unit installed in place of the factory stereo or in addition to the stereo ?

Is it possible to extend the wiring so the unit is away from the dash to see if noise is still present ? This will determine if it is picking up stray EMI or RFI from the dash.
