2000 frontier v6 timing belt

My brother in law has a '00 frontier v6 that has stoped running, the fuel pump is good, getting plenty to engine. The cap and rotor appear ok, but the rotor is not turning. Could the timing belt be broken, and if so, is the VG engine a "free running" or "interference" engine?
Yes it was running when this happened. No back fire or anything, just sputtered and quit.

Do you hear the starter turning though? If so it could be the TB as you stated. The best way to find out is to look at hte crank and see if the pully is spinning as you turn the car over. If it is then verify that the cam is also spinning.

I believe all variants of the VG30 is an interference type. I have an older model and I know it is.
