I just remembered and thought I'd suggest checking your tailgate suspension cable bolts. The ones I'm referring to are the two bolts attaching the cables to the tailgate itself. I also recommend checking the two in the bed as well.

Reason is, I had been closing my tailgate and had not noticed the passenger side cable bolt worked its way out and the cable end got caught between the tailgate and the bed. It did chip a small amount of paint and plastic off of the taillight. Luckily not in a hurry and hadn't slammed it. BTW, I found the bolt on the tailgate edge.

Tightened and all has been well since, damage was minor, but still. Please check and if you find the same, post it up. Jan-05 production K/C D40

Isnt quite the same thing, but I actually lost a bolt on one of the side latches on the tailgate, cuased some mad rattling of the tailgate...While your there, just check those too.
