I have a humming noise, kinda like something vibrating against the firewall. Its on my 4cy. I used a stethescope and think that the noise might be coming from the throttle body. It is very noticeable inside the cab. As far as I can tell, it only happens while the engine is idling. As soon as the rpms change ever so slightly it goes away. When I turn the A/C on, it goes away, because of the rpm change. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this in the throttle body, if in fact that is were it is coming from???
I bought some gumout fuel system cleaner today. Seriously doubt it would make a difference, but it is about time for it anyways. It would be nice if it fixed the problem

Have you opened up the air intake system and made sure nothing is in there?
When I did my 15k oil change, I inspected the air filter and was shocked to find a Pin Oak leaf in the pleats of the filter. It made it into the fender-well, through the resonator box, and up the intake tube.

Hey Jerry
Yeah, I took the airbox off to better access the area when I was searching for the noise with the stethescope. It was a calm day and had just rained, so thankfully there wasn't much in the air that could have entered the engine while it was running while I was searching for the exact spot of the noise.
I was driving home from work and at the stop lights got excited because I didn't hear the noise anymore. But once I got home, I let it idle for a little bit and back it was
Going to let the fuel system cleaner do its thing and see what happens. I doubt it would fix the problem, but as I said above, I hoping it would be something as simple as that. This weekend I going to probe around some more if I ever get this stupid marketing plan done for class.
Didn't somebody here have a similar issue with a fuel line or A/C line or something?? Don't remember the details but there was some kind of clip/retainer that had come loose and was allowing the line to chatter against the firewall. It had rubbed the paint off in a small area.
Sorry I don't remember more, but maybe you can search the forum. Can somebody help??

Thanks for the response. But unfortunately, I checked most of the firewall for vibrations with my vehicle stethescope, and it was pretty quiet. As far as I can tell, its coming from the throttle body.
Thats exactly how it sounds though. Just like something rubbing the firewall. In a couple of weeks I'll be searching some more, and I'll cover the firewall one more time just to be sure.
Thanks again
I was doing some searching around on the internet and found two possibilities, if and only if the 4cyl. have these two things. First, the Idle Air Control Valve, and second, something to do with a line from a charcoal canister. I don't know if my truck has either of these two, IAC vavle or the charcoal canister. Not sure if they use charcoal canisters anymore. I'll have to download the service manual. Until I do, anyone know off hand if my 04 4 cyl has either of these two componnents. I feel like I know a good deal about my truck, so I feel stupid for asking this question if the answer is obvious. Thanks
