today i was headed to my favorite fishing hole (at the end of a pretty rutted out trail). we had a pretty good bit of rain with last friday storms and i guess a few of the good ol boys got in there and rutted it out bad. there were alot of new holes and i hit one kinda hard at the beginning of the trail at about 15mph(definatly was not expecting it). at the time i didnt think anything of if because ive hit a few things quite a bit harder and with more speed without any problems. On the way home i noticed hearing a bit of rubbing on the left front fender. The bumper is not bent nor is the plastic of the fender.
My questions are how can i tell if ive busted one of the shocks? Has anyone else had a problem with their shocks going bad? will the repair be covered under warranty? the bilsteins are supposed to offroad ready right?
My truck only has 12,876 miles on it. I beat the mess out of the electronic controlled shocks in my 86.5 pathfinder with 436,000 plus miles on it with only having to replace those shocks twice. that includes the first 160,000 my dad put on it and he bought it new.
any advice would help. probably end up taking it to the dealer on thursday after i clean it up first.

I thought shocks just dampen movement; not contribute to ride height. Wouldn't it more likely be something bent or maybe a broken spring?
Are you sure the rubbing was the tire against something other than mud? If you have mud caked up in there, I'd definitely clean that out and make sure that's not what something is rubbing against.

got the truck all cleaned up and i took in to the dealer and it ends up that the alignment was way off after the hard hit. they adjusted it and no more rubbing. it was on the splash guard. mud and had also gotten between the body and the guard pushing it forward a bit as well making it sound bad. they said that it was nothing major. and boy am i glad. still payed $62 for the alignment (could have been alot worse). I guess i have to do a bit more to cause any real damage. makes me feel better about the truck.

how will i know if i have actually busted a front shock?
i put on a new set of tires and have noticed a good bit of play in the steering. i also have been noticing a good bit more sway than before when shifting lanes. it almost to the point of scary there is so much sway.
could it just be the tires? the new oset of four i put on are yokohama geolander at+II inflated to 35 psi.
i havent driven it all that much since i posted this thread the first time because i ended up getting to cuts in the two stock tires (rugged trail t/a) that couldnt be repaired and had to wait on new ones to come in. the dealer didnt say anything about the shocks when i got the wheels aligned .

Push down on the bumper on the side you think might be broken. Try to get a good up and down motion going and see if it continues after you let go. If it continues bouncing you probably have a bad shock. Do you notice any fluid leaking from it? That could also be another sign.
I've heard a few stories of the Bilsteins going bad prematurely. Supposedly they were all replaced under warranty, so that might work in your favor if it is bad.
