Step Rail Mods

Has anyone tried to modify the brackets for the OEM step rails on the 2005 frontier? I like the oem look, but they hang a little low. I was figuring I could flip the brackets and drill new holes about an inch and a half lower to raise them up some, but I would also have to chop the brackets to fit higher as well. Seems like a lot of work to do this, but the oem ones make the truck look more like an suv than the beast it is.

Also, is it easy to replace the bolts already in place. I had also thought about putting longer ones in with a plate to pull the rails in closer to the body.

Any thoughts?
