I've got an 05 Fronty KC SE with the standard big button radio/cd. I've already swapped out the factory speakers with new Alpine units. I also added a pair of infinity tweeters to the dash openings and put a small self powered sub under the passenger seat. Since the factory speakers were 2 ohm and the aftermarket ones are 4 ohm the power isn't exactly effortless.
So I've done some poking around and decided to upgrade. I've ordered a Jensen VM9020TS headunit and a Profile HA1040 amp to run everything, except the sub. It has it's own built in amp.
I know this headunit isn't the best out there, but it's reasonably priced, is packed with features and should do all I want. I really like the SD card slot for pictures and MP3's. It'll play cd's, dvd's, has a hookup for a remote camera, a hookup for playstations and a TV tuner built in. I really don't care about the TV part, but the rest is interesting. Anyone here have any experience with this unit?
I was in the market for the same type of unit. I read up a lot on the subject and determined that the Jensen unit was not worth it. There are a lot of poor reviews for these units. I ended up getting a Kenwood DDX-7017 for about $250 more. This unit accepts Kenwood navigation as well.
I would go this route over the Jensen.
Oh yeah, the buttons are red and match the dash pretty well.

I finished my install and I have the 6.5" subs mounted to my rear door. I will give you a link to the pics once I have them uploaded to a suitable site. For now, you can look at a few pics of the install at the Elemental Designs Install Page
They sound pretty good, especially for a 6.5" sub. The enclosure that they are in is a little bit under .2cF. I have some Polyfil that I am goiing to put in to try to get them to sound a little better. These subs are amazing for a 6.5" sub.
What sub-woofer did you put under the seat? I have been looking into adding one into my Frontier KC but was reluctant to give up much of the space behind the seats. Under the passenger seat sounds like an ideal solution.
I have to agree with Symbolgy. If you can spend the extra money, go with the Kenwood or another product. I've owned a head unit from just about every major brand out there; Sony(2), Alpine (3), Kenwood(1), Pioneer(1), JVC(1), Jensen(1). When I bought my Jensen, I was really hooked with the look and features. But after a few months the controls on the unit wore out. I took the unit apart and found that the buttons used behind the "joystick" control didn't have the "spring back" any more. I got rid of it and bought the JVC.
When I wanted to replace my factory unit in my Frontier, I was considering another Jensen with the DVD ability. But I stopped myself when I considered that it would likely not be working within a year. I decided to go with a Kenwood unit (not DVD) and wait a year or so for the DVD units to drop in price. Just my 2 cents. I really hope you have better luck. I think the TV tuner is very cool.

I have the Kenwood KSC-SW1 underneath my driver's seat. I looked first at putting it under the passenger's seat, but the wiring and hardware for the passenger's seat air bag monitoring system got in the way.
I think it sounds very good. Not as good as a traditional 8"-10" subwoofer, but much better than some of the older powered subs on the market. It also has its own volume controls and includes a nifty adjustable bandpass knob to help optimize the sound.

I have a clarion model 303 that I had laying around and decided to add it.
Although it does work ok, I wouldn't reccomend it. Kenwood has a similar type of unit that is supposed to be better. Neither unit is going to add the punch of a large dedicated sub box, but if you are going to go the under the seat route, then do some comparing before you buy. I got the Clarion model a year or so ago when I was unaware of anything else on the market.

That is one nice job. It has to be the best way to go in getting good audio performance without sacrificing any interior space. I'll be interested in seeing the door panels back on with the subs in place.
I just don't have the resources to fashion the sub mounts like that. Great work.
If you recall, I had a local shop install the subs initially, but they did not mount them the way I wanted. They mounted them to the door panel, but I wanted them mounted to the door. Here is a pic of the work that the shop did. What I did was mount the sub in a locations just behind the hole in the door panel. So, the sub was just behind the hole and I was able to ad aspeaker grill to protect them.
Look at the pic and imagine the sub mounted behind this plate and a speaker grill no the outside. I will get better pics up soon.

That's a sleek install! I like it...Curious to see what it looks like now...I can kind of understand getting that grill over it, without it, people would be kicking that thing like crazy.
