After 1,000 miles, I have filled up the tank four times. Here are my numbers for a '06 Nismo KC 6M 4.0 4X4 running on 87 octane:
Tank 1: 245 miles (50% hiway/50% city) 16.7 mpg
Tank 2: 230 miles (90% city/10% city +4H), 14.06 mpg
Tank 3: 245 miles (98% hiway/2% city), 17.56 mpg
Tank 4: 262 miles (90% city/10% hiway) 16.1 mpg
Most of my trips are short; a tankful can last two weeks for me. Lots of cold starts with short runs. From experience, I know my mpg will go up when warm weather hits.
The mpg meter in the Frontier is right on the number. But the distance to empty is wrong: it showed 29 miles to empty and I had a least 70 miles left based on gas tank volume.
why is your milage so poor? i drive mine at 120 KMH (almost 80MPH)
and get 25-26 MPG (highway) to an imperial gallon. thats 21-22 MPG
to a US gallon. is my truck a fluke?

WD, count your blessings and consider your mpg's one of them. I haven't heard af anyone getting over 20mpg. I personally get about 17 with my 2006 Frontier Nismo CC 4X4, and I drive very concervativly.

yeah, i wouldn't complain. my last tank i drove as conserative as possible and got 18.4 i think. congrats on the good mileage.
WD also has higher gears and smaller tires than CT_Nismo. I have the same gears at CT and same tires as WD. I'm averaging 19.0mpg over 11000 miles. My one long highway trip I set cruise at 75mph (check your math WD 120kph is 74.5mph, not 80)...and I got 21.0mpg (300 mile trip and I had under 3k on the clock at the time)
26miles per imperial gallon would be 21.6miles per US gallon. But if your kilometer to mile conversion is off...say by the same factor as above, you're really at 24.2miles per imperial gallon which is more like 20.2 miles per US gallon.
The city/highway mix will make a big difference, so will your right foot. I've also seen a slight drop in my mileage when it's cold outside.

yes i was off on my speed, but not my conversion figures
1 imperial gallon = 4.55 litres
1 mile = 1.61 km
last trip ALL highway
filled at the edge of my city driven to edmonton and refilled immediately
got 24.76 MPG to an imperial gallon.
filled at the edge of edmonton then driven home and
immediately refilled was 25.13 MPG to an imperial gallon.
there was no city driving in this at all. my city milage is running 16-18
mpg to an imperial gallon.
my fill levels may vary a liter or two as well.
my last truck,a 2005 ford ranger supercab 4x4 got 26-28 MPG highway.
my sisters F150 gets 23-24 MPG (imperial gallon) highway so i am kind of
surprised the 4.0L in my frontier doesn't do much better.

My numbers are at the lower end of the range. Is Nismo gearing that impactful? On the highway, I pull 2000 rpms at 62.5 mph in top gear. How does this compare with XE, SE, and LE? Around town, I rarely get into 6th, mostly 5th would be the top. I have noticed that first gear is real low but I spend so little time in it.

Hmm....I'll have to check mine. I should be taching higher than you (same gears, smaller tires).
I think how much you 'play' in traffic matters too. Traffic isn't too bad up here so I just set cruise and go. Could be that the SE and LE have a greater speedo variance than the Nismo, if so, we could think we're going faster than we are and covering more ground too...could easily account for 1+mpg.
At prox 1150 miles, I'm at prox 1/4 tank on my 4th tank. Current tank mpg reads 17.5 +/- depending on city, hills and speed in gear. Not bad really, IMHO. I think mileage will increase further, but I'm even more interested in engine and gearbox smoothness once drivetrain is completely broken in. Switching to synthetic oils will more than likely be done at 5K miles. BTW, mine still doesn't squeak rattle or groan. The only minor noise I've heard sounded like the spare shifting position slightly while going over speed bumps at less than a crawl.

Really???? I had a 2000 Ranger SC XLT 4.0L 4x4 and put 50,000 miles on it while I owned it. I NEVER got more than about 17 mpg on the highway, and routinely got 13-14 in the city. Ford's estimates for fuel economy on the Ranger at best is 16 city/19 highway for the 4.0L MT and 17/21 for the 3.0L MT (AT is 1-2 lower for all). So, even converting to Imp. gal, you were getting above OEM estimates for a 3.0L MT (converted, that's 25.2 mpg Imperial).
I got an average of 18.2 mpg (US) in my auto NISMO Frontier over the last 5,000 mile run between oil changes. If I reset it and drive about 180 miles on the Natchez Trace Parkway (2-lane scenic highway with a 50 mph speed limit) and drive around 60 mph, I get 22-23 mpg.
As for the difference in the Frontier and your Ranger -- Keep in mind that the Frontier has about 60 more HP than your Ranger (4.0L, or 117 more HP if you had the 3.0L V6).

WD... can you elaborate on how youre calculating your fuel mileage? I also find those really high numbers hard to believe.
From Phoenix to Mormon lake this past weekend I got about 20mpg. Given the elevation change and the fact I was loaded with all my hunting gear and 2 adults I think this was pretty good.

the 2000 ranger 4.0 liter has a different engine than the 05 ranger did.
the SOHC engine is more powerfull and gets better milage than the
previous engine did.
my ranger also had a Modded airbox with a K&N filter and a Magna flow cat
back i am sure that contributed to the better milage with it.
and if you got 22-23 MPUSG on your last trip you are getting better milage
than me a i burn imperial gallons.
22.5 MPG US = 27 MPG Imperial gallon
