After Market Roof Racks

opinion....i do a lot of fishing here in the mountains ( fly and spin) and of course, my rods are a lot longer than the bed. i knew i should have gotten a truck with the factory roof rack but hind sight is 20 20. can i get a few opinions on what you all think about after market. are they worth it? do they make a lot of noise? is it worth drilling into the roof of my truck? etc...
appreciate it!

Before getting my Frontier I used many a Yakima rack on my cars. They are very good quality, fasten to the vehicle securely, and have tons of options for carrying items. Thule is also a very good rack and worth considering.

Not sure which board it was on but I'm pretty sure I saw a thread somewhere stating that the new Fronty was 'unYakable' and there will be no Yakima rack for it.

I have read that if you did not get the factory roof rack, then the roof of the truck is not equiped to handle extra weight. The trucks with factory roof racks have extra supports in them it seems.

Not sure how much of that is true though.

Why dont you just get a long tube to store them and lock it down with the Utilitrak? Shouldnt be too hard to build a contraption that will do it without putting a roof rack on.

Thule doesn't make one either. My little brother has a CC Toy and he is a big fisherman with the same problem. He bought this thing that looks like a utlitity/ladder rack for his stuff that mounts to the bed. Maybe thats an option. Seems like I remember something like that is the Nissan catalog.

this is true to an extent. a cc frontier w/o a factory rack cannot be equipped without tearing the headliner open and putting the reinforcements in. this is becaue the nissan rack sits on top of the roof and is supported soley by those extra reinforcements.

most aftermarket racks that i have seen are installed on the door frame or at th eouter edges of the roof. those areas are stronger than the middle of the roof and that is why no extra support is necessary.

someone please feel free to correct me. these are just my observations.

Yes, you are correct. But if you are only carrying fishing rods, the reinforcements are not necessary. Carrying a super heavy luggage/cargo box would be a different story. I have seen on ebay people/delearships selling the reinforcements for the older modle years, nothing for the 05/06 yet.

Thule is working on a solution at the moment, they are actually looking for a volunteer that is near their headquarters (some where in Connecticut) to bring there CC fronty to them for test fitting. As soon as one it available, that is the route that I am going to go!

keep me posted on what you find out. thanks for your alls input. the tube was a good idea only that it would be to much of a pain to take the reels off just to move down to the next hole and plus, some of my rods do not break down. appreciate it though!

So has anyone installed a Thule or Yakima roof rack on their crew cab Frontier, 2005 or newer with any success?

There is still no "official" set up from either manufacturer. I was going to try and "wing it" and figure it out, but the parts are too expensive to be wrong.

However, I have just recently found out that you can order all the necessary parts for the factory roof rack set-up, roof supports and all. The total comes to just over $1000.00.

Yes. There is a member over at clubfrontier who used the track system that mounts directly to the roof to provide a foothold for landing pad/control towers/crossbars. He modded the towers to get a lower profile for a thule storage bin.

There was also someone on that forum who recently did a utilitrack holder for his rods.

If you have further details on how to order those parts, as well as how might install them, I would love to hear it. Thanks !

Here is the site:
clicky

The only thing that I don't see listed and/or mentioned on that website is the hardware (nuts & bolts). I can't tell if they are included or not. Obviously nothing a trip to Autozone or The Home Depot wouldn't fix.

As far as instructions go, I have read on another message board that people have had luck going to the parts department at their local Nissan dealership and getting some sort instructions on how to do the install. It doesn't make sense to me that a dealership would do this (liability reasons since it inolves drilling through your roof) but thats the rumor. When funds become available I am going to order this myself. My plan was to try and find a Fronty with the rack and measure the mounting points.
