Got a little bonus in January for all the unpaid overtime we had been donating to the company on the project I've been on for the past year at work. It didn't take me long to figure out what I wanted. I didn't opt for the upgraded stereo when I purchased my truck because it would have meant a special order for leather, etc, more money and a wait. I bought my Frontier off the lot and got it $500 below invoice.
So.....a buddy at work hooked me up with a local shop who did an excellent job with the install. The head unit I purchased, Clarion DXZ655MP was last year's model at an excellent price from Crutchfield and the shop set me up with Infinity Reference speakers....6010 for the rear and 6012 components for the front. Interesting that every thing they checked said there were 6 1/2 speakers in the front...turned out to be 6x9s so they fabricated a little filler piece. The dash tweeters and the rears are Blaupunkt. Maybe that's why some folks see a marked difference just changing out the head unit. The front 6x9s are marked Nissan.
I also signed up for XM Sat radio...can't believe I waited so long...and got the Delphi SkyFi2 with home and 2 car kits so I can use it in my other car. And lastly the Clarion Ipod interface. The head unit is set up for Sirius but I can't stand Howard Stern and I like XM's programming better.
I now have so much choice in music I don't know where to start half the time and the sound is 1000 times better than what Nissan gives you.

I have the Rockford Fosgate system in my truck and I think it sounds pretty darn good. I am not trying to compete with the folks on the street trying to ruin their hearing before they are 30. It sounds great as loud as I need to have it. I like the fact that it will adjust the sound as the truck gets faster. 6 MP3's will play a whole lot of music for many many hours. I have XM as well. I became hooked on it a year ago or so. I may show my red neck here but there are no bluegrass stations in my area and I love channel 14 on XM! I did test drive a Frontier that had the standard sound system in it and it did sound like it could use some help. I hope you enjoy your new system as much as I enjoy mine!

Is it just me or am I getting old because I think that the factory system is awesome (6Cd/6 speakers version), but the XM I wouldn't mind having.
I'm getting old right with you then, because I think the Rockford-Fosgate package is awesome!! Steering wheel controls, speed-sensitive volume, 6 CDs, MP3 capability, sub under the back seat and 10 speakers adds up the best factory system I've ever owned, and is much more elaborate than any aftermarket package I would want to attempt. I'm sure it could probably be duplicated for a comparable cost with aftermarket stuff, but this has a warranty and factory support, such as it is.
Satellite radio sounds cool, but I got surprised with an iPod nano for Christmas so I'm going to go that route instead. Just waiting to free up some funds.

The RF system is pretty good. I wish I had it -- I tried for weeks searching dealer inventories all over the SE US to find a red NISMO CC with the RF system and without the roof rack and finally gave up.
The base system is absolutely pathetic, In my opinion. I replaced all the door speakers and added a subwoofer. It sounds a lot better now. I will probably buy the 6-CD head unit off eBay pretty soon.

I'm already old...LOL....50+ and I don't have the RF system. The stock system has got to be the worst system I've ever had in a vehicle. Yours probably does sound a 100% better.
I was able to changeout my system for the price of the RF upgrade alone. As I said....it wasn't just a stereo upgrade at purchase time but you were forced to upgrade to leather, etc.
I think I like what I did better than opting for the upgrade at purchase too.

Just a quick question.. The base radio is a double din unit right??? I would like to change it out with a Pioneer Head unit that has navigation. They are only single din but that just gives me another storage cubby hole. Any tips on changing out the head unit or would I be better off letting some one like Sound Advise do it.
Thanks,
Roy
Edit: After some eBay surfing I now see they have a double din version, even better

I my not old but, I think installing audio system is just a wast of money.
It seem a lot of people install audio equipment just to add to the mod list.

You are entitled to your opinion. For me it was a necessity not a luxury. The bonus just helped me do it sooner. I intend on keeping my vehicle for at least 7-10 years. That is my usual lenght of vehicle ownership if not longer. I still have my '90 Volvo and my Audi TT is 6 years old. I spend a significant amount of time commuting. The audio system is important.
You won't see me doing engine or body modifications since there is no value there for me. Mods for me only happen for the value they bring, not the show.

You can get double din but the options are limited. The extra storage doesn't hurt. I got mine from Crutchfield and they sent all that included. They do, though, tend to be a little higher most of the time on price. You just need to know what you want. Mine was actually a very good deal. $199 w/free shipping, the instructions, dash pocket and wiring harness.

A waste of money?? You are a goob...You must have never heard a good audio system before, so you have no idea what a good aftermarket system can do.

It depends on what you listen to. I listen to talk, sports, and most genres of music. I know a lot of people that listen strictly to talk and sports and to them, then yeah, it would be a waste. But if you want to listen to music, then quality of sound is always a plus in my book.
