clunk...first gear

From a dead stop after releasing the clutch I hear a clunk. It almost sounds like theres something in the bed shifting. It does it only starting off in first gear not in any other gears. Any ideas? Engine mount? Center bearing? Any ideas appreciated. Its a 2000 frontier V6 4WD 5speed. It does it in 2WD or 4WD.

My guess would be the carrier bearing for the driveshaft. Or worse it could be the actual rear end. Search through the forum, someone last week posted a pretty nasty picture of a carrier bearing gone out.

I saw that bearing. Looked nasty. Mine *looks* in good shape but I guess looks dont' mean a whole lot. Hopefully I'll have a chance to get underneath it this weekend. I'll post what I find. It shifts perfect still so I'm pretty confident its not in the trans/clutch. It now has 120,000 miles on the ticker.

I had a 98 Tahoe 4WD that had a clunk from standing starts. The gears did not whine and the rear end did not appear to have any problems. I just learned to live with it. The dealer actually said it was an issue with a yoke and if it was still under warranty they would of replaced the yoke with a new design.

center bearing

Had my shaft rebuilt with a new center/carrier bearing and the clunk is gone. She now rides smooth as a chocolate swirl! $350 well spent.

I've got a 99 KC V6 4x4 and it has the clunk also. I've already had the carrier bearing replaced to thats not it. Seems like its coming from the rear end. Its almost like the limited slip axle is unlocking once your stop and then locking back up once you get going. I had recently changed my rear end fluid and did not add any additive which was when I really noticed it. I added a bottle of LSD additive last week and its much better, rarely clunks now compared to what it was doing.
