we have a 98 auto tranny with 115k miles on it. Not sure if the tranny fluid has ever been changed before. Just today the tranny would only shift into 1st and 2nd and will not go any futher. We are thinking about flushing the tranny with new fluids. How hard is that too do with the froniter? anything special we need to do? Or is the tranny already gone?

You may want to do a Search for automatic transmission flush; there have been several posts about this. I can't recall anyone with existing problems posting that they had the flush service. That's too bad, 'cause it would be interesting to hear how it turned out. Personally, I would think it'd be worth a shot at a power flush. I think they can be had for $150 or less.

What does the fluid look like on the dipstick? If it looks like it has metal in it then something in the transmission probably ate itself and no flush or transmission fluid change will save it. If the fluid is dark brown instead of pink then it indicates that the fluid is burned. A fluid change probably will not accomplish much, but it's like chicken soup: it cannot hurt. If you're willing to get under the truck you should have a drain plug on the transmission pan. Drain the fluid and refill. This only changes about a third to a half of the total transmission fluid but it only costs you for several quarts of transmission fluid. Look at the fluid that comes out and see if you can get a better feel for color and contamination.
By the way are there other symptoms? Does the engine seem like its "freewheeling" or under load when trying to go into drive? What's the quality of the 1-2 shift? Is this a sudden thing or have here been any symptoms before it died?
While driving maybe try revving it up high like 3-4gs and while in second and let off the throttle so it coasts a bit. See if it will shift into third then. I had a truck with the tranny that would act like it have a shift kit. It would not shift into thrid unless it was over 3g and even then sometimes only after backing off on the throttle. The level of the fluid was a bit low (different readings on either side of the dip) and it improved (but not completely) when I added some more fluid.

No way. '
That solinoid only locks the torque converter when your cruising. This gives you about a 5% increase in fuel mileage. However, the truck operates WITHOUT that lock engaged while accelerating, so its irrelevant.....
I think

What I don't know about the newer automatic transmission fills books (heck, what I don't know about older transmissions fills books). I know (in the old days) shifting was controlled by valves in the "valve body" portion of the trans. They were actuated by fluid pressure. Except for a "lock up" (like inyourface1650) referred to, the torque converter didn't care what gear you were in, it just spun. Today, if vavles are still used, I imagine they're actuated by servos. I would think the control unit, the wiring, or possibly the servo could fail, or the valve (if it's still used) could still stick (cleaning might help in this case). Anyway, I'm way out of my league here, but I hope you learn what you can about this problem and keep us posted. Hopefully, someone else who's been down this road will chime in. Good luck.
