I haven't quite figured out the roof rack situation on my truck. The front crossbar is very loose. It even came off in the car wash and landed in the bed of my truck.
I have tightened the bolt on each end of the bar that actually clamps the crossbar to the main rack. Also, I have tightened the two bolts on each side of the crossbar that adjust lateral tension. Even when tight, there is lateral play in the crossbar and it appears that it was designed that way.
When I have my kayak tied down on top, the crossbar is stable, but this still bothers me.
I've taken the crossbar off for now.
Oh yeah....I know that the correct orientation of the leading edge of the crossbar should be slanted downward.

Any other ideas guys?

I tried strapping my kayak down to the factory rack. I took a 300 mile trip with it on there. The kayak was laying flat, not on its side. Well after the trip, because of the air flow making the kayak lift from the aerodynamics, the whole rack was loose, even the mount bolts to the truck. That was the last time it has been up there. IF it was mounted with a stacker and put on its side, with air flowing left to right, it might have been better. There should be a clamp that wraps the whole tube to hold it in place. My front bar floats too easily as well.
When I first got my '05 4x4 Nismo CC, the roof rack cross bar was tight. I am a kayaker so I purchased & installed my kayak saddles. After the installation, I noticed both cross bars would not re-tighten. (WTF!!!)
I ended up placing a washer somewhere???? I don't exactly remember what I did.....I'm at work now so I can't run out to my truck and look. When I get home tonight, I'll take a look. What ever I did, I tightened-up good. I'll repost tonight.
Beck & the others,
As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm home now & looked at what I did to solve the loose front cross bar on my Nismo.
Ok - Totally remove the front cross bar by removing the (2) Torx screws on the top of the bar (one on each side of the bar). You should have (3) pieces now - the front cross bar and (2) of the bottom brackets. The (2) bottom brackets have (2) Torx screws each. I noticed on mine, these (2) screws were loose. They were physically tight, but would not tighten on the inside of the bottom bracket. (if that makes sense??) Anyway, I drove to my local Ace Hardware and purchased a package of washers. The washer ID was sized for the thread portion of the screw. The OD was slightly larger than the head of the screw. Slip (1) washer on each Torx screw and apply a drop of Blue LocTite to each screw. Re-tighten both screws and repeat the same on the other bottom bracket. Re-assemble the front cross bar to the roof rack and reposition. I even took a black paint pen and colored the exposed portion of the washer to blend in better.
I hope this works for you all. I even hopped into the bed & gave the front bar a good yank.....it's solid. My directions may be a bit "wordy", but once you do it, it should be pretty straight forward.
That's EXACTLY what is happening on my cross bar. I'm going to try to do the mod this weekend.
Appreciate you checking that out on your rack system.
Thanks, Beck

This post has nothing to do with roof racks. Kayak caught my attention. This post has nothing to do with kayaks
I canoe. I have no roof rack. I put an old comforter, blanket, ya know, on my roof. I put the canoe up side down. Tie it down at bow and stern, bow to frame rails by passing rope through front bumper sheild, stern to rear bumper. Then cinch a pull down strap across the mid section. That strap I pass through the cab while the dors are open. Close the doors. I put a twist in the strap so i dont go stark ravin mad hearing BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ all down the highway. Ive done 75+ for many a mile like this and gone bumpity bump on forest roads, no problem. Just tighten the ropes and strap evey so often.

wow, thanks for the solution man, my bike almost fell off the roof of my truck thanks to the crappy front cross bar.

I just put a yakima rack up there and noticed when I was tightening the hand screws that the front crossbar started to slide back and forth...wtf! Im glad I found this post and appreciate your solution. I think I follow what your saying. Did you just use flat washers to make it snug? I havnt taken it apart yet so I may be askig a retarted question. Thanks for the solution!
Yes VAFRONTR, I just used flat washers. One underneath each of the four screw heads. The only screws that get a washer are the four on the UNDERSIDE of the front crossbar. The topside screws do not need a washer. I hope this helps. It did the trick on mine.
