GPS, Car Tracking system. Your opinions

Hello all. I'm new to the Frontier Forum, but have been a member for some time over at the Nissan Sentra Forums.

My wife and I just recently paid off our Nissan Sentra SER Spec V and just purchased a New 05 Nismo Froniter 4x4 CC.

That said, I've been looking all over the net for a vehicle tracking system. Either something like lo-jack which is radio signal driven or Concealed GPS Units. Some systems have a monthly fee, but I hate monthly fees.

Since there is so much info and systems out there, I was hoping to get your thoughts or opinions on a system that will help us locate our vehicles.

We were thinking about getting an almarm system for our Frontier, but all thye do is make noise.

Thanks

I don't have much to offer, but I'll get your thread back to the top with a "Welcome to the Frontier Forum".

FWIW, a LoJack system would be great, but don't underestimate the power of making noise with a regular alarm system.

The NISMO comes with the NISSAN standard "immobilizer" system (RFID Key) and the alarm. Together I think they make a pretty good package. Maybe add a "club" or something similar for additional protection.

But then again, I live in a pretty quited place where vehicle theft hasn't been an issue... knock on wood.

yeah i feel pretty safe with the RFID key deal. I have had that on my last 4 cars so i guess I trust it With my last car I just learned to park in the correct areas which also helps.

dont mean to thread jack, but dont all of the Frontiers have the RFID key? maybe i dont know what the RFID system is. i thought it was a transmitter inside the plastic of the key which sends radio waves to a receiver in the ignition system. meaning, if the special key is not in the car or near the ignition, the car will not start.

someone please correct me if I am wrong so that I can call my insurance company and get a discount if I, in fact, have this feature.

for reference, here is my key. sorry for the crappy phone cam pic

Your key has the RFID. Nissan keys without RFID have no chrome emblem. You night have a "valet" key that is all black. It will open but won't start your truck. Try it out. If the valet key doesn't start the beast, then you've definately got the immobilizer feature.

Someone else may know exactly which vehicles have this option or if it's on all Nissans, but I don't know.

For the Record, my 2005 SE Fronty does not have the RFID. My vehicle has no alarm system, so it doesnt have an immobilizer.

I think it only comes with the factory alarm system.

Well, no keyfob....but...
I have two keys, one with the chrome, one without. Both start.

All you with the immobilzer, look at the bottom the key. Point the actual metal part towards your eyes, and you will see a small black cutout/cover on the right or left side of the plastic, I think on a couple of our QX4's it was Blue....this is where the immobilizer chip lives. Well, the last 10 or so Nissans we've had (my dad worked at nissan) have had this.

Neither of my keys contain the cutout, so I am assuming I am immobilizerless.

Now, they could have changed the design of the key, and actually placed the chip IN the key....

mine does not have the cutout either. maybe i dont have the immobilizer either.

as for the valet key, the one without the chrome logo, i think the only difference between that and the regular key is that it cannot unlock or lock the tailgate and glove box. it should still start the vehicle. that key is intended for valets so that they can drive your car but not get into your personal belongings.

The black key on mine will start the car also, I think the only thing it doesn't unlock is the bed.

YOu have the immobilizer if you have that little blinking redlight on your dash. Its like a key symbol that flashes when you're car is off.

I agree, the valet key will definately start the truck, it's the key I leave whenever I have service done on the truck, that way I don't have to keep taking off and putting back on the key. I won't leave the whole key ring with house keys with anyone, valet key works great for this purpose!

Huh, well, perhaps they have stopped using the little cutout, and now build the immobilizer chip into the plastic....
