4wd engage question on a 05'

i am unsure why this happens so any help would be greatly appreciated. i have an 05' frontier kc, se 4wd manual, so my question is when i engage on a cold day just starting out in 1st, i get continues clicking as if it wants to engage but doesn't. in the begining i was trying to switch to 4wd prior to putting it in gear and realized that was a no no, so i tried to engage when in 1st gear at a complete stop and this occurs. for some reason i am not getting this. my jeep 94' never had this problem. what am i doing wrong. please help! thanks nick

Why is it a no-no to turn the knob before you put it in gear? (I wouldnt be asking this if the stupid thing still had a second lever like my old truck.)

clutch in, gear shift in neutral to switch into 4wd-lo, otherwise it grinds

4h you can do at any time, driving, neutral, clutch in or out

thanks for the replies. i thought it would be a bad idea for 4 hi to be in neutral because the 4 lo says the same in the manual. i thought it didn't make a difference w/ the 4 hi, but i wanted to check w/ you guys first before i embarass myself at the dealer. i'm taking her in w/ a laundry list of things to fix, so i will add this one as well.
