It's not about saving 50 cents an oil change. It's about doing something unneccessary. I also would bet that the fly on the wall at 99% of dealerships would tell you that they dont change the washers either.
Now if you want to change the washer, thats fine, but for you to say it is dangerous or stupid not to is exaggerating the issue to the entire forum.

Please review any of my previous posts and find where I ever said that not changing a washer was dangerous or stupid--you'll have no luck. What I DID say is that the crush washer serves a legitimate purpose and I am amazed that people, yourself included, don't seem to realize that. Though my certs are lapsed, I have been an ASE-certified mechanic. I was raised in my father's garage, and my guess is that I've done more oil changes in my 56 years than just about anyone on this forum, you included. I always use a torque wrench, and I have re-tapped dozens of oil pans for amateurs who didn't think it was necessary.
If you want to save $0.50 per oil change, I wish you the best, but the original poster asked about the wisdom of using said washer, and and now he's heard the options. I'll let him use that information to make his own decision, and you can have the last word. I'm out of this discussion.
