Question 4x4 clicking noise

Hi all, any ideas what`s going on with my 01 SE 4x4 making a clicking noise from the front wheels? If I shift to 4wd and then back to 2w it stops. This is my first 4x4 but i`m a sports car mechanic though. thanks.

Usually a clicking noise is associated with bad cv joints. If you only get the noise when the wheels are turned then that could possibly be it..

I checked them and they seem to be ok. The noise comes when the wheels are just straight. But shifting from 2wh to 4wh and then back to 2w seems to stop the clicking.
